(Skimpy week!)Recent Theatricals
The Libertine (WeinsteinCo) -- Johnny Depp apparently does very naughty things in this period piece I've not yet seen and therefore cannot logically comment upon. (director commentary, featurette, 10 deleted scenes)
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (Sony) -- Someone told me it's a sequel to Tron. I think they were kidding. (filmmaker commentary, original short film)
The Matador (WeinsteinCo) -- Pierce Brosnan is drop-dead freakin' hilarious in this movie. I know, I was surprised too. (two commentaries, featurette, 11 deleted scenes, radio interview)
Stoned (Universal) -- The allegedly, maybe, somewhat potentially fact-based story of the young Rolling Stones -- or at least the guy who quit the band and drowned at 27. (no extras)
Catalog Picks
My Chauffeur & My Tutor (Brentwood) -- Nothing says "sex comedy" like the possessive "My." How did nobody think to make My Hooker? (no extras)
(Happy 4th!)

I know you'll find it hard to believe if you live in the Puget Sound area, but this weekend we're scheduled for yet more rain. Like a good Seattleite, I like my rain and dark cloud cover as much as the rest of you, but even I'm starting to get excited at the occasioal glimpses of blue sky and sunshine. As always, though, you have lots of movie options to keep you happy, and chances are whatever theater you choose, there's a coffee shop nearby to get your obligatory caffeine fix to boot.
This week brings us the Seattle Arab and Iranian Film Festival (March 31-April 6), and what a lineup! The festival has some promising films lined up, including Sundance winner Iraq in Fragments, Gate of the Sun, a 278-minute epic film about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as told through the 50 year history of an uprooted Palestinian family, and documentary The Color of Olives. Check out the full schedule here.
Jolie in Beowulf: Variety in 60 Seconds

As if the nerds weren't having a good enough summer ... Angelina Jolie has been cast in Beowulf, which Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary are adapting for Robert Zemeckis to direct. Zemeckis is planning to do a performance-capture thing similar to the technique he used on The Polar Express to assault us with multiple Tom Hankses. Except there probably won't be 600 Angelinas running around on this one. Sorry. - The Weinsteins have optioned Panic, the latest thriller from author Jeff Abbot, which just hit stores yesterday. The story tracks a young documentary filmmaker "who learns that most aspects of his life have been total fabrications." Well, that's ironic.
- Hack director Renny Harlin has signed with Screen Gems and Lakeshore to direct The Covenant. It'll follow "a mysterious stranger at an exclusive prep school". And it will suck.
- An early-Rolling Stones biopic written by the guy behind Die Another Day? And it's a "note perfect pastiche of Swingin' 60s style? With Monet Mazur as Anita Pallenberg? What are we to make of Stoned?
