Joss Whedon Will Gladly Buy the Rights to 'Terminator'

The rights to the Terminator franchise have only been up on the auction block for about as long as it takes Arnold Schwarzenegger to emerge naked from a time bubble, but a veteran Hollywood mogul has already expressed interest in taking the brand off the hands of the now-bankrupt Halcyon; and that vet is none other than Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, and Titan A.E. screenwriter Joss Whedon (oh, and he created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and "Firefly"/Serenity, but I don't think anyone has ever heard of those).

Mr. Whedon took the time out of his busy schedule running his latest TV show, the Eliza Dushku starring "Dollhouse", to write an earnest letter to Halcyon making the case for why he's the right man for the job. And as with all things Whedon, his proposal has its fair share of the funny.

In it, he outlines the six possible directions he'd take the franchise, which range from simply adding more Summer Glau ("There's a reason they're called "Summer" movies.") to sending a Terminator to Middle Earth ("because he's a cyborg and he doesn't give a s#&% about the ring -- it has no power over him! And he can carry it AND Frodo AND Sam AND f@%& up some orcs while he's doing it. This stuff just comes to me. I mean it.").

Now his opening bid of $10,000 may be a smidge lower than the estimated $200,000 Halcyon is asking for the rights, but with a formal business plan as detailed as Whedon's, I'd be flabbergasted if they turned it down. Read on to check out the full letter, which may or may not contain similar offers to also buy Batman and Lord of the Rings.

Cinematical Seven: TV Stars Who Should Be in More Movies (Female Edition)

Evangeline Lilly

Isn't it funny how the entertainment world plays around with the calendar? The "official" television year ended last week, and the "official" summer movie season is in full bloom, so what better time to think about TV stars who should be in more movies? Last month we offered our picks for the gentlemen of the dramatic arts; now it's time to focus on the women.

Even though I just used the royal "we," let me hasten to add that the following picks reflect my own personal thinking. Thanks to a nifty new DVR, I watched more television shows over the past season than in the past, but I won't pretend this is a comprehensive list. These are the women that jumped off the screen.

1. Evangeline Lilly

That memorable image of her from the first season of Lost -- in her underwear, at the beach -- pretty much defined her, initially. Lilly had precious little acting experience before the series began, so she had to learn on the job. And she hasn't always been terribly convincing. But she's come into her own, and is now able to capture attention even without speaking, even with all her clothes on, even as part of that ridiculous love quadrangle. She's learned that less is more and cuts a strong figure as a loving, adoptive mother and a sexy, deadly criminal. She has a small part in The Hurt Locker, which finally opens next month, and could easily transition into supporting roles in just about any kind of movie now that Lost is nearing its finale.

Joss Whedon to Whip Up a Short Film Ode to Summer Glau

I've been a fan of Joss Whedon ever since I sat down in the sun, flabbergasted at the thought of a Buffy television show, to catch a re-airing of "Welcome to the Hellmouth." Once I was hooked in permanently, it became clear that the man loved not only the idea of defying stereotypes and praising strong women, but honoring his cast members. When Firefly fell, a few found themselves in the Buffy and Angelverse. But one who didn't, Summer Glau, had already popped up as a ballerina on Angel (look above!). But it looks like that wasn't enough for Joss, because now Glau is getting a short film, Whedon-style.

MTV reports that Joss has written a short film/ballet called The Serving Girl for the current Terminator, full not only of Whedon plot, but more Whedon music. This entire project is completely at the whim of scheduling, but the pair have teamed up with a choreographer, so that's promising for the short. Also promising -- the fact that Terminator might get canceled and leave Glau open to dance her toes off for the short.

What say you? Should Glau stay on TV kicking butt, or head to the short film world to dance once again?

A Sea of 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles' Posters Hit the Net

Unfortunately, lots of posters these days don't amount to much. Either they're too run-of-the-mill, or they use so much damn airbrushing that it looks like Robert Zemeckis took over production and live captured the whole movie, instead of it being a plain-jane live-action film. Everyone once in a while, a simple one surfaces that just seems to get it -- often with Steve Carrell. (The 40-Year-Old Virgin poster was brilliant, and the Get Smart poster, which we premiered yesterday, isn't too shabby either.) And then sometimes, just sometimes, the posters just plain rock.

If the four pics that Entertainment Weekly just released of The Sarah Connor Chronicles are any indication of the show's content, this sucker should be great. Making a show based on Terminator is all sorts of tricky, but man, they knew how to cast. The first poster has Summer Glau, probably one of the coolest fighters ever, in all of her robot glory. Then there's Lena Headey channeling Linda Hamilton with that tough tank and bulging veins. And then, delightfully, more Glau. There's one with her naked torso, boobage covered by her hair (see pic to the right), and another where her skin is burned away to show the machine below.

I think the lesson is simple. For the most part, the simpler, the better. Sometimes studios try so hard to make it look cool, that any appealing potential gets stripped away. There's a reason why posters like these work -- they take the best of what the movie has to offer, or in this case a show, and lets it speak for itself. That being said, I wonder why Thomas Dekker doesn't appear in any of them?

Check Out the New TV Terminator!

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », Newsstand », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

Entertainment Weekly has published the first photo of Owain Yeoman as one of the new evil Terminator's in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a new show hitting Fox this January (click on the image for a larger version courtesy of Coming Soon). The series picks up, time-wise, after Terminator 2: Judgment Day, while Sarah Connor (played by the very lovely Lena Headey, 300) and her son John (Thomas Dekker) are on the run from the authorities and, well, evil robots. Eventually, they decide to stop running and confront their problems head-on. To make things interesting, John meets a girl at school (Summer Glau) who turns out to be the new Terminator sent to protect him and Sarah. In addition to the television show, we'll also be getting three more Terminator films, all of which (we believe) will take place in the future and not in present day. Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins (aka Terminator 4) may or may not be directed by McG and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2009.

What do you think about this new Terminator TV series? Does it have any promise, or do you not see it making it past the first season?

Are Plans for 'Serenity 2' in the Works?

The ever-lovable, wonder-writer/director Joss Whedon needs to get a few projects on the go. After running himself ragged with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, he brought the world a small helping of Firefly, a pretty kick-arse movie adaptation Serenity, almost made Wonder Woman, and continued the story of the slayers in comic form. Having handed over the reigns on that, what's left to do? It's not like Veronica Mars is still around for him to guest on! Well, he's still working on his supernatural Goners script after getting a bunch of studio notes, but Whedon never takes it easy, so it's not a surprise that after reviving his first beloved series, there's rumors of a Serenity 2.

Oh yes, the Browncoats might come back -- not necessarily to the big screen, but to DVD. While the film's box office didn't live up to expectations, it has, unsurprisingly, had a heck of a stint on disc. Moviehole recently chatted with Alan Tudyk (Wash), and he said: "They had to put [the new DVD] out because they've been selling out of the other one, and so Universal's like 'So, let's do another one.' And now... there's now a chance there's going to be another movie." Well, this is just about the most solid Whedon rumor you can get. While he always has a million potential projects swimming in his head, it's big news if the studios can see an audience and get interested in the idea.

So, does this make you giggle with schoolgirl-like glee? If so, keep picking up those DVDs and we might just see Serenity fly again! But heck, they could even keep the ship docked the entire time and show a lot of Summer Glau butt-kicking. Who wouldn't be up for more of that!?

Is There Too Much Talking in Action Flicks?

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Images »

With a long weekend behind us and a big film festival ahead, things have been slow. When there's far from a plethora of news of deals and major casting info to share, we get to be even more fannish than usual (if that's even possible!). Funny enough, while I was writing up my Uber Cool & Quotable Gun-Toting Antiheroes, my friend sent me a comic -- one that gave love to the complete opposite kind of fighter -- the silent, butt-kicking hero. You might have heard of the site -- xkcd. While it is, by no means, an example of stellar art, their strips are damn funny and often movie-nerdy.

Recently, they tackled action movies, ruing over the amount of conversation in them -- go read it here. As the disappointed stick figure rants: "Just once, I want a real action movie. 30 seconds of exposition followed by a perfect 90-minute action scene. One with a huge budget, a good choreographer, and a great director." Of course, there's probably no one better than River Tam to do that. You know -- the chick who wildly kicked arse with her ballet ways in Joss Whedon's Serenity (and we can't forget Firefly).

The strip is not only funny -- it also brings up an interesting point -- have action flicks gotten too talky? We're all suckers for a good, wonderfully-delivered line, but have we forgotten the allure of silent strength? Summer Glau's character didn't say much, but she made many fans with her slick fighting moves. District 13 would be another example -- David Belle talked, but it was his fluid parkour that made waves. I love a good quote as much as the next person, but there's just something to be said for the sweet, choreographed action on its own. And call me crazy, but I'd pay to see River Tam beat up everyone!

'Come With Me If You Want to Live' -- Trailer for 'Sarah Connor Chronicles'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », 20th Century Fox », Home Entertainment », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

OK, we're skirting dangerously close to TV Squad's turf here, but hey, it's not every day you get a new TV series based on one of the most popular science fiction series of the modern age! Click right here to check out the brand-new promotional trailer for Fox's The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which not only delivers the seriously sexy Lena Headey as the titular character, but also Firefly's Summer Glau as a sexy robotic butt-kicker sent back from the future to keep our young hero safe! Cool! (Oh, and the young man looks like he could be potentially "dreamy." His name's Thomas Dekker and he can presently be seen as Zach on Heroes.)

Created by genre veteran David Nutter (he's worked on geek-shows as cool as The X-Files, Roswell and Smallville) and written by War of the Worlds co-penner Josh Friedman, The Sarah Connor Chronicles will take place between the action of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and the deliciously dark ending of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Won't that placement kind of spoil some of the surprises since those of us who saw T3 already know what happens to these characters? Well, maybe. But I'm pretty sure that Nutter and Friedman have considered that angle. Plus we can always use another GOOD sci-fi series on television, so color me suitably psyched to see Sarah this fall. (Just in case you forgot: Lena Headey was the woman in 300. The only woman.)

Yes, Summer Glau Is Going To Be a Terminator

It was just a little under a month ago that there was news from The Terminator TV spin-off The Sarah Connor Chronicles. At the time, fans were asking what part Serenity's Summer Glau had signed on for. Sci Fi Wire recently spoke with Lena Headey (300), who plays the Terminator "matriarch" Sarah Connor and she confirmed that Glau was hired to play one of the Terminators for the show. That's right, there's not one but two Terminators. Headey told Sci Fi Wire that Glau is playing one and Owain Yeoman will be playing the other. Sci Fi Wire also reported that during their chat with Headey she also told them "One is good and one is bad; she didn't say which is which."

The show picks up where the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day left off. Headey described the pilot, saying, "it's them basically running, hiding, trying to live, trying to carve out a normal life for themselves, but always being watched and trying to locate Skynet, trying to stop [it]. But there are many, many issues in their way." The pilot was scheduled for 2007, so since shooting has wrapped it won't be long before fans get to find out just what kind of Terminator Summer Glau is going to be.

Is This the Face of the New Terminator?

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », RumorMonger », 20th Century Fox », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

To be honest, the last time I truly enjoyed the Terminator franchise, acid wash was still a viable fashion choice. So I've watched the The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV project with only a mild curiosity as to how the story would translate on the small screen. But an interview on IGN with Serenity's Summer Glau is a tasty piece of gossip for any Terminator fan. Glau spoke guardedly about finishing up work on an unnamed Fox pilot, saying, "Well, I'm not supposed to say yet. It's supposed to be a surprise. But it's killing me, because they've announced some of the other characters." Immediately, the rumor mill went into overdrive and the word spread that the "unnamed pilot" was Chronicles.

Variety has since confirmed that Glau will be joining the cast of Chronicles this fall. The only mystery left is what her role is going to be. The producers have already announced that Lena Headey will be playing Sarah Connor. So the question is, whom does Glau play? So far, the money is on her playing a Terminator in the story, but at this point it's all just speculation. Fans of Glau's work in Serenity and Firefly are already offering up her experience in the action story as proof that she is suited to the role. Until Fox makes their official announcement though, speculation is all we've got.
