Indie Spotlight: New Releases for Sept. 5
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Foreign Language », Gay & Lesbian », New Releases », Family Films », Columns », Indie Spotlight »
Look, I don't want to make it sound like an either/or thing. You can see wide-release films AND art-house indies. I'm just saying that on this particular weekend, the only wide release is something starring Nicolas Cage in a mullet, and it wasn't screened for critics. So if it were an either/or thing, this would be a good time to become an art-house fanatic, and the Indie Spotlight is here to let you know what your options are. Seven films are opening in limited release today: August Evening, Everybody Wants to Be Italian, Mister Foe, Ping Pong Playa, Save Me, A Secret, and Surfer, Dude. Here's the scoop on each of them.
Everybody Wants to Be Italian
What it is: A romantic comedy about a man and woman who both pretend to be Italian because they think the other is. OK, maybe this doesn't actually sound any better than the Nicolas Cage/mullet thing.
What they're saying: At Rotten Tomatoes, all of the reviews so far are giving it a big ol' kick in the meatballs.
Where it's playing: A few dozen theaters all over New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and ... Salt Lake City? Well, OK.
More info: The official site has a handy list of theaters where it's playing.
Ping Pong Playa
What it is: A light, clean comedy about an Asian-American kid who has to step in when his family's ping pong championship is threatened.
What they're saying: Cinematical's Monika Bartyzel found it simply adorable last year at Toronto, saying it's predictable but charming. The reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are mixed so far -- it's either sweet and likable, or an annoying Napoleon Dynamite retread.
Where it's playing: New York City, plus the California cities of San Francisco, Alhambra, Berkeley, Glendale, Hollywood, Irvine, and San Jose.
More info: The official site has upcoming playdates, too.
Matthew McConaughey Is a 'Surfer Dude'
Filed under: Comedy », Deals », Distribution »
I know I'm not the first person to come to this conclusion, but Matthew McConaughey really does seem to have a charmed existence. Sure, he makes some crappy movies, but they keep paying him to star and we keep paying to see them in theaters. Coming Soon reports that the perpetually shirtless actor (I'm not complaining, mind you) has struck a deal with Anchor Bay Entertainment to release Surfer Dude, a comedy that he produced.McConaughey stars as Steve Addington, a surf bum who returns home to Malibu after a world tour. The good times don't last long, and when the waves disappear for the whole season, Addington starts to go off the rails. In true stoner fashion, producer Mark Gustawes was quoted as saying, "Matthew plays a character who's a throwback to the '70s: Peace, love, and a righteous wave is what 'Surfer, Dude' is all about. Anchor Bay dug it -- and we decided to surf it, together." Classic, brah. McConaughey scored some (kinda) big names for the film including Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson -- I can only imagine the dust clouds of smoke coming out of those trailers.
Anchor Bay will release the film in theaters this summer, but they're also planning to release the film onto DVD shortly after. Back in the old days, when a studio jumped on the home video release it meant the movie was no good. Luckily, these days a studio can spin it into a bright shining example of the new face of film distribution.
Surfer Dude will coast into theaters in late summer.
Matthew McConaughey Replaces Owen Wilson in 'Tropic Thunder'

When Owen Wilson dropped out of filming Tropic Thunder due to his sudden (and, thankfully, non life-threatening) hospitalization, I was pretty bummed -- that film was shaping up to be one of my most anticipated of 2008. I know, I haven't been too fond of Ben Stiller as of late, but he had lined himself up with one heckuva cast, and the premise sounded like a blast. Hey, that rhymes. Cool. But what can you do -- sh*t happens -- and since the cast still rocks without Wilson, it's all good. Now, Variety tells us they've found Wilson's replacement in one Matthew McConaughey. But you McConaughey fans shouldn't get your hopes up too much, as Variety claims "the job amounts to an uncredited cameo." So no matter who took on the part, we still would've been left with the same response: "Oh, look, it's blah blah blah in a cameo role. Ain't that cute?"
McConaughey joins a cast that already includes Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Nick Nolte, Jay Baruchel, Justin Theroux, Bill Hader, Steve Coogan and, although nothing official was ever released, apparently Tom Cruise may show up playing a studio executive in another one of them uncredited cameos. Those of you who know Stiller and his entourage should be aware that his films are full of these cameos -- but that's what makes them sooo special. In the flick, directed by Stiller, a group of actors gather to shoot a big-budget war film on a remote island. However, problems arise when the situation calls for these fake soldiers to become real ones. McConaughey will shoot his part over the course of one week; he also just finished filming the flick Surfer Dude for director Andy Tennant. Tropic Thunder hits theaters on July 11, 2008.
Casting Bites: Electra Avellan, Nathan Phillips and more Natasha Lyonne
Filed under: Comedy », Horror », Independent », Casting »
Variety had a slew of tiny players bits the other day, so here's the rundown:- One of the in-law nieces of Robert Rodriguez has been cast in an upcoming horror movie called Pearblossom. The niece in question is one of those babysitter twins from Grindhouse -- Electra Avellan. According to Bloody-Disgusting, the Ron Carlson-helmed flick is about: "a beautiful young woman who's been selected by the creator of the universe to lead a life of greater purpose. She is instructed to devour evil, and thereby gain eternal life." Hmm, interesting -- acerbic, toenail painting babysitting to chewer of bad things? Or, is her fellow cast member, Scout Taylor-Compton the evil eater? You might remember the latter as the Dean's little sister on Gilmore Girls, who made news a few years ago when she ran away from home for a brief period.
- Back in February Erik told us about Matthew McConaughey's upcoming well-cast flick, Surfer Dude. Now there is a younger beefcake to add to the cast -- Nathan Phillips. You might remember the actor from his stint in Wolf Creek, or as the kid in need of protection in Snakes on a Plane. I imagine he'll either be some sort of younger surfing cohort, or maybe Matthew's son? There is still not much being said about the movie, but you can find pictures of the older dude here, and IMDb says its a: " A wave twisting tale of a soul searching surfer experiencing an existential crisis." Rad.
- Finally, there's the struggling Natasha Lyonne. Years ago, she was the alterna-version of the typical Hollywood girl -- cute and snarky, and with both mainstream (American Pie) and indie cred (But I'm a Cheerleader). Then, who knows what happened, but she spiraled into something that could rival La Lohan -- there's the intoxicated driving, threats to molest a dog that led to her becoming a fugitive and the life-threatening period in the hospital. It seems that she has sorted the past out, and is now adding another role to her rising list of movies-to-come. This time, it's a role in the indie film -- The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle -- which comes from award-winning short film guy David Russo. It's a Start-to-Finish project out of Seattle that's a comedy about Dory, a white-collar guy who loses his job and has to become a night janitor for a market research firm. There, he "discovers [that] the janitors are being experimented on surreptitiously, with unexpected results." Welcome back, Natasha!
McConaughey is a Surfer Dude

Finally, Matthew McConaughey has nabbed a part that's perfect for him. For those of you who aren't all too aware, McConaughey likes to spend his off time hanging around beaches, romancing random women and, basically, living the "high" life. So, it's only fitting that he should sign up to play the lead role in a film called Surfer Dude. Production Weekly reports the long-haired hottie bachelor will star in the pic ... however, no plot description was given. Though, with a title like that, do we really need one?
Right now, McConaughey is busy filming Fool's Gold; an action adventure flick that reunites him with Kate Hudson (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days). Directed by Andy Tennant, Fool's Gold looks and feels like 1984's Romancing the Stone ... except, this time, the couple is already married. According to IMDb, the actor also has three other films lined up (not including Surfer Dude), so we're not sure whether he'll be riding waves next or visiting the ghosts of his past girlfriends (which, honestly, kind of freaks me out -- how does a young guy have so many dead girlfriends?).
