'Rambo IV' Gets Another Title and New Poster

Filed under: Action », Lionsgate Films », Remakes and Sequels », Images », War », Posters »

The first teaser poster for the new Rambo movie has debuted over at IGN, and with it comes another interesting development. Is that a new title we see on the poster? Is the sequel now simply titled Rambo? The last thing we heard was that Sylvester Stallone was going with Harry Knowles' suggestion to hang on to the working title, John Rambo, after internet criticism of "Rambo to Hell and Back" made the actor-director rethink that one. Of course, this poster would have had to have been designed before all that, so it's more likely that they went with "Rambo" because it's the most easily associated name to use for a tease campaign. It's like making a poster that just says "Indiana Jones". You don't need a full title to get people pumped.

As for the rest of the poster design, I'm into it. The black and white with rain thing makes me think of Sin City, and I'm always supportive of a minimal design with stark contrast. It is a little weird, however, that the background is white on one side and black on the other, only because the black background parts aren't as noticeable. If they're going for a representation of Rambo's internal conflict, they've allowed for the good (white) to be the focus. Of course, that could be the point. But then they shouldn't bother having Stallone facing his back towards us. Besides the fact that the pose is being overused in poster design this year (see this, and this, and this, and this, and this, and this, and this, and this, and this), the closed-off image makes us think about Rambo having some heavy issues. Then again, his head is turned toward the -- wait a second; I just realized I'm analyzing a Rambo poster. Sorry. Umm. Hey, look at that cool machete. This movie is going to rock!

Behind-the-Scenes 'Cloverfield' Footage and Possible Title

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing »

Some raw behind-the-scenes footage of Cloverfield has popped up online, and someone says they snapped a photo of the possible teaser poster. All of this ... and Andy Rooney ... on this edition of Unsolved Cloverfield. Cue theme music, raise lights -- and here we are, back again with more Cloverfield nonsense to keep you busy for all of about five minutes. First up, someone has posted a minute or so of video showing Cloverfield shooting a few "everyone run for their lives" scenes over on YouTube. The clips are cut together pretty well, so either this person is a spy who knows how to edit (which wouldn't surprise me in the least considering this is the footage that was shot in Los Angeles), or this person has something to do with the production. Meaning, all of this was leaked on purpose. I guess we'll know soon enough; Paramount loves to go after these sorts of things. Interestingly enough, I saw no cameras present. And that last shot is positioned so well, it definitely leaves me a bit skeptical. But it's Cloverfield (supposedly), and those people are running for a reason.

Apart from this video, some dude named Tom emailed us a tip regarding a cellphone photo the photographer claims is some sort of teaser poster for Cloverfield. It's important to note that in no way do I think this is legit, but I figured I'd toss it out there for you folks to judge as well. The poster itself features the Statue of Liberty without a head, the New York skyline in the distance, the date 1-18-08 in the bottom right-hand corner and the title -- wait for it -- Monstrous. The photo itself is a blurry mess, and the entire thing wreaks of photoshop. Coupled with the fact that the person who shot the pic claims they saw the poster at some sort of collectibles booth probably means there ain't much truth to this. Then again, you never know. Cloverfield/Slusho/Monstrous is due out in theaters on January 18, 2008.

ComicCon Update: Star Wars, Indy 4, Star Trek XI and Wonder Woman

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

ComicCon is exploding with information regarding some highly anticipated upcoming projects. Because we love you more than Superman in a wet t-shirt contest (don't ask me where that came from), here's a quick update:

  • Those of you lucky enough to be attending ComicCon this weekend in San Diego can drop by the Paramount booth and pick up a mini one-sheet for Star Trek XI. Produced and directed by Lost creator J.J. Abrams, the new Trek will supposedly revolve around a young Kirk and Spock as they begin their Academy training. Oh, and did I mention there's already a teaser poster available online for all to see? Star Trek XI is on course to land at some point in 2008.
  • Steve Sansweet, head of Lucasfilm's Fan Relations, spit out some tasty Star Wars tidbits, telling fans they expect the Star Wars animated series to premiere in 2008, with the live-action series to follow sometime before 2010. Currently, the first batch of scripts for the animated series have been completed, and folks are working real hard on those first episodes. The animated series will take place during the Clone Wars, after Anakin Skywalker has achieved Jedi Knight status. Some of the characters expected to appear are: Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Count Dooku, Palpatine, General Grievous and Asajj Ventress. On Indiana Jones 4, Sansweet noted David Koepp's script will be ready in a couple of months (What else is knew?), with pre-production tentatively starting at the end of 2006, or early 2007.
  • Finally, Joel Silver spoke a little bit about why he decided to jump onboard a new Wonder Woman film. According to the producer, the idea popped into his head during initial tests on The Matrix. When Silver realized Trinity was testing the highest out of any character, he figured Wonder Woman might not be such a bad idea. On casting the female superhero, Silver says, "She'll probably be someone you never saw before, because she's very young, but I think we'll have a good time with it." And the guessing games continue ...

Snakes on a Poster 2: This Time With Actual Snakes!

Yeah, I was a bit perplexed too upon viewing a teaser poster for the upcoming Snakes on a Plane that, well, didn't include any snakes in it. I would have loved to be a fly in the wall during that brilliant marketing meeting:

SOAP Marketing Genius #1: Hey, so what should we include in the new Snakes on a Plane poster?

SOAP Marketing Genius #2: Well, we definitely need Samuel L. Jackson and a few other cast members. Um, probably a shot of them on a plane or at least something that looks like a plane. Hmm, what else? Ooohh, a catchy tagline in a font that screams, "Go watch this movie fool!" Yeah ... fonts are cool.

SOAP Marketing Genius #1: I agree. Oh, and no snakes. We want to keep the audience guessing there. Are they small snakes? Are they big snakes? Do they talk? Walk?  Heck, there are so many different ways we can go with this -- I'm literally bursting with excitement!

Idiots. Anyway, Bloody Disgusting was lucky enough to get their hands on a French teaser poster for Snakes on a Plane which, for a number of reasons, is so much cooler than the U.S. version. And yes, there are snakes. Seeing this French poster leaves me questioning why on earth the American one is so tame and boring? Do you think it has something to do with our post 9/11 fears of the airplane? Or are the marketing folks really going with a whole "leave it up to the imagination of the audience" philosophy? Who knows. Enjoy.

Inspirational Moments in Movie Marketing: The Saw III Teaser Poster

Filed under: Horror », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing », Remakes and Sequels »

If you're looking for a person who absolutely adores the Saw franchise then, I'm sorry to say, but you won't find him here. Okay, I'll admit the first film was okay. Yes, just okay. However, being the kind of guy who still slams his eyes shut at the sight of tons of blood and guts on screen, imagining, for a brief moment, a garden with beautiful flowers and reciting words like, "It's only ketchup" over and over again -- yeah, it's safe to say these films aren't my cup of tea.

This is part of the reason why I avoided the sequel and, subsequently, will stay far away from the third installment. Go ahead and call me a wimp -- fact is, I just don't see how anyone can find entertainment in watching a person mutilate themselves and still be able to scarf down some tasty artificially-flavored buttered popcorn. That's correct -- If I can't eat, I don't watch. Oh well, my loss. Anyway, the marketing geniuses who brought you a teaser poster for Saw II which featured partially severed fingers and was eventually banned by the MPAA are back at it again with a delicious new advertisement for Saw III. This time the served fingers are replaced with some guy's disgusting teeth sockets. And I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but I'd rather visit the dentist than pay ten bucks to see this film. Have at me folks!
