Kevin Smith on Judd Apatow

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom »

"I'm thankful for that guy. Nevermind the fact that he brought us Seth Rogen, which I'm really thankful for, but he did shatter that glass ceiling and made my job much easier in terms of, like, trying to get the next one made."
-- Kevin Smith on Judd Apatow

Last month, I traveled to Red Bank, New Jersey and enjoyed a very cool lunch with a very cool dude by the name of Kevin Smith. While we scarfed down some tasty Italian food, I recorded roughly an hour and a half of our conversation -- all of which would be way too much to read in one post. Thus, I've decided to break some stuff up into sections and post them separately, then I'll be back with much more in the coming days leading up to the October 31st release of the pretty hilarious Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Here, Smith talks at length about Judd Apatow, the impact Judd's films have had on his own work and what sort of advice he received from the director of Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin while making Zack and Miri. Check it out.

Kevin Smith: "I heard someone describe it thusly, and I kinda agree: 'Kevin Smith opened the door for Judd Apatow, and then Judd Apatow in turn opened the door for Kevin Smith.' I can't argue with that. For years we've been doing these movies that were a mixture of raunchy and sentimentality and sweet. And I've always felt like the ceiling for that movie with that formula is $30 million. You can't get the rom-com people and you can't get the raunch people in full -- you're gonna get people who like a mixture of the two and you're left with whoever can tolerate both.

40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad come along and they shatter that glass ceiling. They proved this sh*t's commercially viable. So the first time I see 40 Year Old Virgin on DVD, I'm like, 'Holy shit! Somebody made a movie like I would've made it."

Confirmed: Seth Rogen Knows Nothing of a 'Ghostbusters' Sequel

For awhile now -- and ever since it was announced there would be a new Ghostbusters video game -- those Ghostbusters live-action sequel rumors have been all over the place. The latest, shoveled out through Dread Central last week, claimed that the sequel was going forward -- with all four original Ghostbusters (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis) returning -- along with "Seth Rogen and the crew from The 40 Year Old Virgin." Yes, word on the street had it that the new ghost hunters would be played by Rogen, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Romany Malco.

Hey, as a fan of all those dudes, I personally think it's a pretty good idea. Unfortunately, Rogen knows nothing about the so-called collaboration. I asked him about it earlier today during the Pineapple Express NY press day, and it kinda took him by surprise. "Really? That's f**king rad! No one's told me about it, you're the first one. You got a script? [laughter] "Yeah, no -- are they actually remaking Ghostbusters? Sounds fun, though -- I'm psyched about it ... but are you sure I'm not playing Slimer?" Rogen joked, following that up with his trademark deep, cough-like laugh.

So, sorry Ghostbusters fans -- at least you have the video game to look forward to. And, who knows, enough people get onboard with the idea and maybe this wild rumor will eventually become reality. Question is, would you want it to?

The 40-Year-Old Virgin Meets Borat

And if such a film were to ever exist, I'm sure it would be hysterical. Following the success of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, co-writer, producer and longtime Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Dan Mazer is now officially a hot property in Hollywood. In fact, he's exactly where Judd Apatow was following The 40-Year-Old Virgin -- looking to capitalize on the gigantic box office blockbuster he just happened to stumble into. So, it would be fitting for these two gents to team up on a project, and that's exactly what's about to go down. Yay for us? Or yay for them? Yay for everyone!

Mazer has signed a deal with Universal to write and make his feature directorial debut on a new comedy, to be produced by none other than Judd Apatow. Of course there's no word on what the project will be about, save for the bland description of "broad, out-there comedy," but I imagine it has the potential of being one helluva fun time. Mazer will also be working with Cohen on his follow-up to Borat, Bruno, and has written (and produced) for Da Ali G Show and Dog Bites Man. When asked what he thought about all the success that has followed Borat's big-screen debut, Mazer summed it up perfectly by saying, "It's an absolutely incredible thing, that a man who dangles his testicles in another man's face can be looked at for an Oscar nomination in the same film." But see, that's why this is such a great country.

Mazer plans to begin work on his script once he finishes a re-write on the Fox comedy New Year's Steve. No word yet on casting, but I assume since he has such a tight relationship with Cohen, the man will be showing up in either a cameo appearance or a main role. Yay or nay?
