Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 11/10

Up
If there is one disc sure to fly off shelves this week, it's this one. The Pixar film made instant fans out of most viewers, and agonizingly ripped the rest of our hearts out with the love story opening. In her review, Jette Kernion said Up is "a very good movie that defies demographic categorization." By now, your minds are probably made, but if not: Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

The Ugly Truth
How do you follow up comments about Knocked Up being a little bit sexist? By producing and starring in a film that teaches a smart and successful woman the "ugly truth" of life from a notorious chauvinist, naturally. In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson wrote that this romcom "actually knows next to nothing about dating advice, the behaviors of men and women, or much of anything else romantically human." Skip it and save yourself. Also on Blu-ray.

Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut
We all knew this was coming -- the step above the director's cut, the disc for uberfans of the graphic novel -- a version of the film with all of The Black Freighter interspersed as it was in print. Grab this, and you should have everything you need from the big-screen cinematic experience. If you adore all things Watchmen, Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

The Accidental Husband
When he wasn't spending time in Watchmen's blood and carnage, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was becoming Uma Thurman's Accidental Husband. Another one of those floofy romcoms, this flick takes Uma back to her Cats and Dogs days, but this time, she gets the radio show and the man. I imagine. Do you care? Skip it.

Coming up on the new year, it's interesting to see which films we had thought would've been released by this point. In the summer of 2007, I recall myself and several colleagues showing up for a press screening of Jonathan Levine's lauded slasher, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, only to discover it was canceled just that morning and the film had been sold from the Weinstein Company to Senator that afternoon. (The film has since landed at Sony, whose indie arm, Sony Classics, already saw Levine's follow-up, The Wackness, to a proper theatrical reception.)

At least the Weinsteins gave something up for a change. The oft-shuffled Killshot and Fanboys are tentative January and February releases at the moment, respectively, and I just want to see for myself if The Poughkeepsie Tapes has been worthy of its modest reputation following a BNAT '07 screening -- the same BNAT that featured the reportedly sweet Trick 'r Treat that WB continues to hoard.

A perhaps more morbid curiosity has me keeping an eye on Paramount's Case 39, just to see if it's really that bad, and who knows what similar straits Assassination of a High School President, The Accidental Husband (originally last March), and Possession (originally last February) are in following Yari Film Group's bankruptcy -- not that I have much invested in the last two, but Assassination is a perfectly release-worthy noir take-off that deserves a home.

So what do you guys and girls think? Which of these are you most dying to see? What was the longest you ever waited to catch something, and were you ultimately disappointed or satisfied by the time it came your way?

Uma Thurman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan: Ask 'Accidental Husband' Stars a Question

Filed under: Fandom », Interviews », Unscripted »

The Accidental HusbandDon't you just hate it when you're about to get married, and whoops -- turns out you're married to someone else? Especially if you're an uptight talk show host, and he's a fun-loving fireman you've never met?

Oh, those crazy kids in the movies. Such is the plot contr... I mean, the plot, of The Accidental Husband, which stars Uma Thurman as Emma, a "relationship expert" (think Dr. Phil in heels -- wait, OK, don't) who's about to get married to a fine, upstanding publishing executive (Colin Firth) when she discovers that on paper, she's already legally betrothed to some guy named Patrick (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). It seems that Patrick got himself hitched on the Interweb to Emma just to mess with her after his fiancée (Justina Machado, who played Vanessa on Six Feet Under) called in to her show, got some advice from Emma and then dumped Patrick's fun-loving behind. I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty sure this movie ends with Emma and Patrick shaking hands civilly, getting an annulment, and living happily ever after with other people.

Ah, kidding. Rom-com silliness aside, it's always a pleasure to watch Uma Thurman doing comedy (I've erased My Super Ex-Girlfriend from memory, and so should you), and a greater pleasure still to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan getting his shot at leading-man status. Grey's Anatomy fans will recognize him as Denny, the doomed heart patient who was unlucky enough to a) have a bad ticker, and b) fall in love with Izzie; and after a co-starring role in P.S. I Love You, he's inching up the ladder to stardom.

Uma and Jeffrey (or is it Jeffrey Dean?) will be interviewing each other for Moviefone's Unscripted series this Sunday, Feb. 3, and we need your questions -- so while everyone else is thinking about the Super Bowl, Uma Thurman could be thinking about YOU. Submit your questions for Uma and/or Jeffrey on this post, then check back here to see if your query made the cut. The Accidental Husband opens March 7. Good luck!

Edited to add: Please don't forget to include your name and the city you live in. How else are Jeffrey and Uma going to be able to stalk you?

NOTE: We just got word that The Accidental Husband is being moved to the summer, so unfortunately the Unscripted interview is off for now. But thanks to all for the excellent questions -- we'll save 'em up for later.

Rossellini and Maddin to Open Berlinale's Forum Sidebar

Filed under: Comedy », Independent », Berlin », Shorts », Exhibition », Cinematical Indie »

If there's one thing that can be said about Isabella Rossellini, other than praising her talents, is that she knows how to pick interesting filmmakers to collaborate with. She was put on the map for her work in David Lynch's Blue Velvet, and now she's been spending a lot of time with Canada's Guy Maddin. She starred in The Saddest Music in the World, and he helped her make an excellent short, doc film about her father Roberto called My Dad is 100 Years Old. Now she's continuing to make shorts, and Variety reports that she will open Berlin International Film Festival's 38th Forum sidebar with Maddin -- just a year after they screened the Roberto tribute there.

On the second day of the festival, Guy will screen My Winnipeg, his snowy homage to his hometown that I reviewed during TIFF, while Rossellini will contrast his black and white humor with her international premiere of Green Porno, which is looking to be the next step in the actress' sexy filmmaking. Her directorial debut, Oh La La, dealt with cities, sex, and symphonies, whereas this short film is a "collection of three one-minute shorts that explore the mating behaviour of insects." I wonder if that will include the decapitating mating rituals of preying mantises?

If you can't make your way to Berlin to see her take on sexin' insects, or you want to see her in something much more mainstream, you can head to your local theater and see her in The Accidental Husband -- that romcom with Uma Thurman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan -- this March.

'The Accidental Husband' Trailer Is Now Online!

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

Just over a decade ago, Uma Thurman was the sexy face masquerading as radio show host Abby (Janeane Garofalo) to get the guy in The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Now she's getting her own time behind the mic in the upcoming romcom The Accidental Husband. As the story goes, Thurman plays Emma, a relationship-themed radio talk show host who has a loving, conventional fiance (Colin Firth), and a book deal on the way. However, when a fireman's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) upcoming marriage is derailed by her advice, he schemes up revenge to throw her off-guard -- making them legally married through the wonders of the Internet. While pretending that he doesn't know how this marriage happened, the two begin to fall for each other, which is complicated by Emma's other man.

With the romcom's release being only a few months away, Moviefone now has the HD trailer up for you to enjoy (or you can check out the non-HD version above). It's looking like your typical romantic comedy -- girl finds out what she's missing in life with the guy who oozes charisma -- first she hates him, then she can't help but fall for him. Uma has that same strange, caffeine-high sort of presence she had on Cats and Dogs, Firth is his usual caring British self, and Morgan, well... He's got some sweet romantic charisma, and it just makes me wish that I had better animal mojo the day I was fortunate enough to meet his dog. (Aren't canines the way to sweet, wonderful romance?) You'll also notice Justina Machado (Vanessa Diaz from Six Feet Under) as the fireman's advice-seeking fiance, and Isabella Rossellini's name in the final credits page, although she's sadly missing from the trailer. This could be good, and this could be bad, but here's to hoping that it's better than My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

Colin Firth Joins The Accidental Husband

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting », New Releases »

It's official, Uma Thurman is determined to become the next queen of the "Rom-Com", and you have to wonder why, considering My Super Ex-Girlfriend was a bit of a dud. Thurman's new film, The Accidental Husband, has finally gotten around to casting some husbands -- Colin Firth -- who, for better or for worse, will always come to mind when we hear the words Mr. Darcy, has joined the romantic comedy currently shooting in New York. According to Variety, Jeffery Dean Morgan (Grey's Anatomy) and Sam Shepard have also joined the cast.

The story centers on a local radio talk show host (Thurman) who gives relationship advice. Of course, it all backfires when a disgruntled caller decides to wreak havoc on her love life. Firth is cast as Thurman's husband with Shepard in the role of the crusty but lovable father -- is there any other kind in these movies?

It seems like Firth is slowly becoming the go-to guy for romantic comedies that want to add a little "class" to the proceedings -- call it "the curse of Bridget Jones" but Firth also has just finished working on Helen Hunt's Then She Found Me and Anand Tucker's When Did you Last See Your Father with Jim Broadbent. Now if only Uma Thurman could pick a movie that doesn't look like it came from Meg Ryan's reject pile.

Uma Accidentally Gets Hitched

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting », Newsstand »

For some reason, Uma Thurman seems to have decided she's going to dedicate her career to starring in the movies that industry-types like to call romcoms. (Because, you know, busy Hollywood producers just don't have time for all the extra syllables it would take to say "romantic comedies.") From Prime, she moved on to My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and now has signed to star in The Accidental Husband, yet another romance with a wackiness factor somewhere between those of the first two. According to this morning's Variety, the movie has a plot that was stolen from that bastion of creativity, Friends: Thurman will play a woman who, upon getting engaged, "learns she is already married." Wait, let me guess: Drunk in Vegas? (Hey, if they end up going off in an alien abduction, or "drugged and hitched so they could legally steal her kidney" direction, I'll be thrilled to be wrong.) So, Uma heads out to track down whoever this other dude is and, yes, finds herself conflicted. You probably never saw this coming, but she likes them both. And just so you know, it took FOUR WRITERS to come up with this.

The movie, which Griffin Dunne is in talks to direct, will shoot in New York this fall.
