Box Office Report: So a Penguin Walks Into a Box Office Brawl ...

Filed under: Action », Animation », Comedy », Horror », Box Office », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »

As expected, the animated penguin flick Happy Feet danced and waddled its way into the top spot at the box office this weekend, however its $42.3 million just barely beat out Casino Royale, whose $40.6 million fell short of the previous Bond (Die Another Day) opening of $47.1 million -- the current franchise record. While Royale took a small lead after Friday, it was quite obvious the cuddlier tuxedo-clad protagonists would ultimately prevail -- c'mon, those giddy penguins are way cuter than Daniel Craig.

After dominating the media and the box office for two straight weeks, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan ($14.35 million) took a respectable ass-beating, but still managed to beat out the other two family flicks in theaters to take third place. Tim Allen and the Santa Clause 3 continues to disappoint (in more ways than one) falling to fourth with $8.2 million, and Flushed Away ($6.8 million) rounded out the top five. Saw III ($2.8 million) and The Departed ($2.6 million) continued to linger around, while it was a pleasant surprise to see one of this year's best films, The Queen ($2.3 million), narrowly beat out one of this year's worst, Let's Go to Prison ($2.1 million), for the tenth and final spot.

Box Office Report: It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Borat

Audiences everywhere proved it's not quite time yet for Christmas flicks, as Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan not only held onto first place at the box office this weekend, but it promptly took its lead and used it to beat down those playing catch up -- most notably, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Borat chomped on those numbers and spit out a whopping $29 million, whereas Tim Allen's holiday pic hobbled into second place with $16.9 million. See, your film can have all the buzz in the world heading into its release, but at the end of the day if the final product fails to entertain (ahem, Snakes on a Plane), it's all for nothing. (Oh, and it also helps to screen your flick beforehand. Hint, hint.)

If you took Borat out of the equation, most of its audience probably would have helped propel Will Ferrell's Stranger Than Fiction into the weekend's top spot. However, with the Kazakhstani news reporter wreaking havoc, Ferrell's film fell to third with $14.1 million. Regardless, after a fall full of drama, violence and horror, it's nice to see three comedies dominate the box office. I say bring on the laughs -- we desperately need them. Speaking of horror, Saw III managed a fourth place finish, even if its $6.6 million was a little blah. But what does that say for everything behind Saw? Not much, apparently. Hey, but you have to hand it to Babel ($5.65 million) for beating The Departed ($5.2 million), The Return ($4.8 million), The Prestige ($4.6 million) and Harsh Times ($1.8 million).

Trailer Park: Obsessed Much?

Obsession. What does it mean, why does it happen and why can't we stop it? I never asked Burger King to invent chicken fries, but now that they're here, those delicious little fried pieces of heaven have destroyed my life. Now, every time I pass by a Burger King, I must stop in and grab an order of chicken fries. Even if I just had some the day before, I wonder, "What if there's a new dipping sauce and others have tasted it before me? What if this new dipping sauce is only out for one day? What if I miss this golden opportunity?"

I'm sure there are other chicken fry addicts out there who feel my pain. And, trust me, it's okay to come forward -- we need your support. However, the need to consume fast food constantly is only one type of obsession. We can obsess over people, places, events -- I know one person obsessed with a chair. Don't ask.

This week, we're taking a look at films that have themes of obsession running through their veins. Though I'm not sure whether or not we'll become obssessed with these films once we've watched them, I will admit that, after staring at those fries in the picture above, I'm suddenly craving, um, you know. Welcome to another fantastic edition of Trailer Park:
