Only thing I don't get about this poster is why they would put the words 'Coming Soon' underneath? Why not show off the film's July 18th release date?

For those who haven't stopped in to hang out here for awhile, The Dark Knight has been a subject of debate lately. First, Elisabeth wrote a Fan Rant on the selling of that Joker toy, and how some folks are cleaning out the supply, jacking up the prices and selling it on eBay -- profiting off Ledger's death and the increased demand for a collectible. Meanwhile, I pondered whether Ledger may get himself an Oscar nod out of this role; how it's about damn time we start recognizing the wonderful performances in these fanboy flicks, instead of focusing solely on special effects and sound editing. So feel free to chime in here or on those other posts. Unlike the poster, we'll tell you The Dark Knight arrives in theaters on July 18.

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: Could Heath Ledger Land an Oscar Nod for His 'Dark Knight' Performance?

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Awards, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

When Heath Ledger passed away earlier this year, he left the planet as one of this generation's great actors; a guy who battled many personal demons off the screen, for sure, but one who gave everything to the role. And while we won't get to see his latest creation on the big screen until July 18th, early footage shows Ledger's version of Batman's arch-nemesis could go down as the darkest, baddest and craziest we've ever seen. My question to you, then, is: Will it be enough to land Ledger another Oscar nod come next year?

Sure, the Academy isn't all too keen on recognizing superhero movies unless we're talking about special effects or sound editing, but with bigger actors taking on riskier comic-related roles, isn't only a matter of time before one of these guys (or girls) turns out a performance worthy of a gold statue? Are these characters not meaty enough; are they not conflicted, troubled and crying out for a hug? If an Oscar can go to Javier Bardem for playing a sadistic, calculated murderer in No Country for Old Men, and Johnny Depp can be nominated for playing a sadistic, calculated murderer -- both in the same year -- I see no reason why Ledger's Joker can't be taken into consideration.

It's early still, I realize that -- but should this guy turn in the kind of performance we're all expecting, shouldn't he be recognized with an Oscar nomination? What are the chances here, folks?

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Dark Knight' TV Spots!

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Two new TV spots for The Dark Knight have arrived online over at The Tube; both of which, I'm sure, are making the primetime rounds as we speak (I know one of them debuted during Sunday night's Survivor finale). The two spots (check out one above and the other after the jump) are pretty Joker-centric, with some brief comedy thrown in via Bruce Wayne and Alfred/Lucius Fox. I gotta say I'm loving Heath Ledger's performance more and more each time another bit of video arrives. It's amazing he pulled off this role, especially since most of us counted him out when his casting was first announced: "Heath Ledger as The Joker? Really? Seriously? Is that a joke?" Well kudos to him -- I, for one, cannot wait to see this whole thing play out on the big screen.

Question: Will you be seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX or in a conventional theater?
You know, I have always had a dislike for the collectible business. Most children of the 70's and 80's probably do, as we were generally left crying because our Transformers or Star Wars collections were incomplete. My own bitterness arises from not being able to get a figure of April O'Neill, the redheaded reporter and best friend of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That was the first time I learned that adults collected these things -- and not to play with, but to sell for ridiculously high prices. And I learned it courtesy of my dad, who knew guys hoarding April O'Neill figures, and who wouldn't cough one up to a fellow cop for his young, geeky daughter.

So, this story from the New York Post reporting Heath Ledger's Joker figure selling out everywhere makes me sad and angry. It's not that kids are being denied a Joker figure (I really do not think young children should be anywhere near The Dark Knight, and I'm pretty liberal about kids watching dark movies), but that Ledger's death is being shamelessly exploited on eBay. Because you know as well as I that those figures wouldn't be flying from the shelves if Ledger hadn't passed away earlier this year. I have no doubt it would be popular, but no one would be buying 30 of them. They wouldn't be going for $55.00 a pop. (Actually, it looks like that's some hyperbole, as a brief glance suggests it's more in the range of $30-$40, but it's still the principle of the thing. Sell enough and you've turned a tidy profit.)

Ledger's untimely death is the kind of thing that collectors cackle with glee over. You know that ten minutes after the news hit, there were men and women saying "Sweet, all that Dark Knight stuff is going to be really valuable!" How lucky for them his final film was one that actually produced collectibles and not, say, Brokeback Mountain or I'm Not There. At the same time that Warner Bros is treading oh-so-lightly on all things marketing in order to stave off screams of exploitation, eBay is doing brisk business.

Now, before you flame me, I don't mean all collectors are bad. There are geeks who collect because they love, and there are those who collect purely and utterly for profit. Nor do I deny there is a happy medium between the two -- everyone hopes their still-sealed Chewbacca pays for retirement. I have friends who lovingly buy two of everything, one to save in packaging and one to rip open and mess with. Even I, who sniff at their obsessiveness, broke down and bought a NECA "convention exclusive King Leonidas" last year in San Diego. (Not long after, I laughed at myself and opened it. Weeks later, I damaged him, thus proving why my future children can't count on my geekdom to provide a college fund.) But there's a line of nastiness, and it usually consists of using an untimely death to make a small fortune. It is reprehensible and cheap, because somewhere out there, individuals are finding pleasure in Ledger's death. I don't care who it is, how they died, or when -- no one should ever find a reason for joy in a death. Especially when that reason is financial gain. If the thought makes me a goody-goody Pollyanna, so be it.

It's a small thing and it shouldn't bother me, but it does. Ledger's family approved the figure, and I think they were right to do so. Like most anticipating the film, I have been very vocal in believing that all should proceed as if Ledger was still alive. Don't dwell on the fact that he isn't. But I can still wish for world to act with a little class once and awhile. What I hope is that Mattel produces enough to completely drive down the value -- thus making a fool of anyone who paid an obscene price, and anyone who's got 30 of them to unload. Not only is it a fitting plan for the Joker, but it's a good dose of karma.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor Central: 'Captain America,' 'Iron Man 2' and 'Batman 3'

Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Ever since Marvel announced release dates for a slew of new comic book-related films yesterday, the internets have come alive with scoopers. We were a bit burned on the last rumor Cinema Blend reported, so take all three of these with a huge grain of salt.

Captain America: According to CB, Matthew McConaughey is the first name to hit the possible cast list. The film, now titled The First Avenger: Captain America, has been given a release date of May 6, 2011, and so I wouldn't expect a name to sign on for awhile. That's not to say there isn't a wish list floating around -- and, if one did exist, I imagine McConaughey's name would be on it, along with several others. I'm sure fans already hate the idea of seeing Mr. Rom Com himself show up as their beloved Captain America, but I actually think it's a good choice -- an interesting choice -- and one I'd definitely support. With the right script, he'd bring the looks, the muscle and the charisma. (Actually, I could kinda see him playing Thor, too.)

Iron Man 2: Yes, work will begin on this monster right away as a release date of April 30, 2010 is already in place, giving Jon Favreau and his team two years to get what will soon become the world's most highly-anticipated sequel in the can. But what will it be about? Well, CB claims that one of the plot lines being considered involves Sam Jackson returning as Nick Fury in order to team up with Stark to go after a terrorist called The Mandarin (featured prominently in the comic books as one of Iron Man's greatest villains). They also claim Marvel may throw a Thor cameo into the sequel to further tie The Avengers thing together, and also because Thor will debut his own film a couple of months later on July 4, 2010.

And the Bats???
Batman 3 (aka the one after The Dark Knight): This is the shakiest of all rumors, because it's sort of obvious already -- but here goes: CB claims the next Batman flick will not include the Joker in any way; his character has been written out of the script. Furthermore, it will be a direct continuation of The Dark Knight and feature Two Face as the main villain. Not only that, but there's a chance Robin will show up too. And people rag on us for being spoil sports! So, in order to preserve your innocence (I'm upset that mine is now gone), I shall copy the best quotes here.

Eckhart addressed the fact that the world has not been given a glimpse of his scarred district attorney, and promised that whatever fans have cooked up in their brains is nothing like what we're going to see. "That's right, people don't really know yet. I can tell you that, basically, when you look at Two-Face, you should get sick to your stomach. Being the guy under all that, well, that was a lot of fun for me. It's like you would feel if you met someone whose face had pretty much been ripped off or burned off with acid. I can't talk about it beyond that because I don't want to give away too much of the plans by Chris. There are fans on the Internet who have done artist's versions of what they think it will look like, and I can tell you this: They're thinking small; Chris is going way farther than people think."

Gallery: The Dark Knight

I always find it remarkable how much Internet fandom makes it to the eyes of actors and directors. Watch what you write on your blogs -- they're everywhere!

Eckhart sees Two-Face as a vigilante crime fighter; a man who retains a strong sense of justice despite what befalls him. I'm not quoting all of Eckhart here, because I am fairly convinced he spoiled something, but the rest is safe: "My guy identifies with everybody in the movie. Really, all of it is more than an adventure tale, it's somewhat of a mirror of our times. It deals with some fundamental questions of what's going on in society. To me, this film is about how Batman feels about justice, how he takes care of the city, how he feels about the Joker when he meets him and sees what he is capable of doing. How he feels when Harvey Two-Face takes matters into his own hands. It's not simple, and it gets ugly. I think people will be surprised."

The Dark Knight arrives on July 18.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'The Dark Knight' Trailer, Chock Full O'Forshadowing

Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Finally, the wait is over! The second full length trailer for The Dark Knight is up and it is all kinds of cool. Unlike the feeling left by the two Incredible Hulk trailers, I feel like there's plenty of scary Joker goodness waiting for me in the theatre.

Maybe it was the long wait, maybe it's just that there's a point of excitement one reaches, but this trailer seems kind of ... understated? I don't want to say flat, because it is anything but -- yet compared to the explosions and shrill laughter of the first, this one suddenly brought Batman back into the real world. When the bootleg was leaked, my e-mail box was flooded with people complaining that Ledger was too "gritty" and "realistic" in his performance. I don't share the complaints, but the Joker is definitely missing the eerie, superhuman element. I like it, but I can see why many might not.

Love the foreshadowing surrounding poor Harvey Dent. I'm already half in love with the handsome D.A.; I can't wait to see how Nolan handles his fall from grace. Watch it, and rave about it. Or complain. I think this might be the trailer that divides an audience -- I'm watching the comments to see! The Dark Knight hits theatres July 18th.

When Katherine Heigl suggested to Vanity Fair that Judd Apatow's movies were sexist, the assertion came across like an after-the-fact shrug of acceptance. Ever the galvanizing provocateur, New York Times critic Manohla Dargis confronts the issue head-on with a thorough analysis of the gender bias in this year's summer blockbusters.

With "Iron Man, Batman, Big Angry Green Man" and other massive expressions of virility invading the box office, female roles appear to be relegated to the back of the multiplex. Dargis touches on the rumors that Warner Bros head Jeff Robinov believes no woman has been able to sell a movie since Julia Roberts (a point that Natalie Portman might contest, but not Paris Hilton) before sizing up numerous upcoming studio releases, with particular attention paid to Anna Faris, "who could be the next Judy Holliday but without the right material will, alas, probably end up the next Brittany Murphy." It's the kind of pronouncement that hits you in gut.

Faris, it's worth noting, landed one of the least sexualized female roles in a potentially mainstream comedy as the goofy stoner in Gregg Araki's Smiley Face. (Sadly, the film barely found a theatrical release before it got dumped on DVD.) While her performance as a rejected Playboy mansion inhabitant in The House Bunny looks like a confirmation of Dargis' dour thesis, at least it allows a woman to step into the limelight of the big screen, just as Baby Mama has done to great success. For now, however, Dargis remains unconvinced. "In 2008, when a white woman and a black man are running for president and attracting unprecedented numbers of voters partly because they are giving a face to the wildly under-represented, you might think that Hollywood would get a clue," she writes, concluding, "Nah."

What do you think? At last, one was put up on YouTube -- check it out above. As you probably remember, during that (patently unfair) viral campaign that saw about three hundred lucky fans invited to theatres all over the planet, from Seattle to London, one lucky fan in each group got a film reel of the trailer to keep. Everyone assumed it was just a standard copy of the thing.

Wrong. It turns out this version has been edited by the Joker -- lots of black-eyed smiley faces and "HA HAs." I haven't watched the whole thing because, again, I want to see the new trailer relatively unspoilt, but it is pretty funny. Especially the JUMP! he scrawls next to Batman.

It's good to see the Joker running around the Internet again; I'm going to miss the crazy guy come July 18th. It's been fun. I rather wish they would release this trailer into theatres, though, if only to gauge the audience reaction! And why stop there -- as a final gag, the Joker ought to mess around with all those midnight showing reels.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Another Poster From 'The Dark Knight'

Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images, Posters

We wanted a trailer, not another poster! Oh well. It is the new banner advertisement for The Dark Knight -- and drat the shape, I had to shrink it ridiculously small to fit our width. You can see a full-sized one over here, courtesy of JoBlo.

Batman is just on a path of destruction in the poster art -- flaming buildings, shattered windows. The geek in me is wondering if this poster is actually a prequel to this one -- and that's how he made the flaming bat. I know, I really should get out more.

Sunday will be here before we know it. We'll have something new to talk about other than posters and complaining that we didn't make it to a Joker drop fast enough.

Nothing has approached the Internet-wide madness of the bowling ball hunt, and Jim Gordon didn't see fit to contact many of us for the next one.

Probably the most disappointing aspect of it was that despite the online community participating wholeheartedly, none of us got the trailer payoff. Roughly 300 people in the targeted cities were invited into movie theatres to watch the trailer on the big screen. The rest of us have to wait until Sunday, when it will premiere online.

I guess this is what comes of throwing our admiration behind a villain. He never looks out for you in the end! Maybe I'll sell him out to Jim Gordon after all!

At least you all have something to mark on your calenders this weekend. Inevitably though, a bootleg has appeared online. It is bad quality and may be gone by the time you read this, but it's available here. I'm not embedding it because Warner Bros will inevitably ask us to take it down, and I want to see this in the official Quicktime quality. Don't you?

Do you suppose this is the last viral campaign we are going to get? As I'm not watching the bootleg (call me a purist!), I have no idea if we see Two-Face. If we don't, that could be another big viral reveal, but it seems to just be winding down. Which is a bummer, as I never landed so much as a Joker card!

The Dark Knight opens July 18th.

[via SuperheroHype.com, and Ingen Ra, who also sent us the trailer]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Dark Knight Posters Riff on Two-Face

Filed under: Action, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images, Posters

Are any of you super-fans? I'm talking about the type of fanatic who will buy every single thing associated with a beloved franchise or movie -- from toys to posters -- plus any video store or movie theater paraphernalia that can be scored. If you are, what do you do if you love Christopher Nolan's take on Batman? More specifically, what happens if you run out of wall space? Do you keep them on rotation?* More posters for The Dark Knight have popped up online, over at Omelet.com, and you can check out one of them above.

I'm really digging these obscured-face posters (although not so much the action shots). They're eerie and simple, yet they say so much -- especially with the inclusion of Harvey Dent. It alludes to this whole Two-Face scenario, as well as the way each man chooses to fight -- with games, with weapons, and with politics. I just wish we didn't have to wait so long to see it! Yes, when we've been anxiously awaiting the dark world of Batman, and Heath Ledger's last complete performance, July 18 is too far away.

*And what do you do when the next movie you love comes out? Do you ever have retro months where everything from one movie comes out of storage?

[via Empire]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New 'Dark Knight' Poster Unveiled on Viral Website

Filed under: Warner Brothers, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Posters

This impressive-looking new (final?) poster for The Dark Knight recently appeared on the film's fun viral website, WhySoSerious.com. If nothing else, it has to be the most intimidating piece of advertising we've seen for a modern comic book movie. God bless Christopher Nolan for refusing to make anything about this franchise remotely cartoonish. How the hell Batman actually imprinted the flaming bat signal onto that skyscraper, I'm dying to know.

The website also contains a note reading "Four Days," which presumably means that one more trailer will appear on Monday, April 28th. (At least, that's what the folks at ComingSoon.net speculate, and I tend to agree.) If I didn't feel duty-bound to watch it, I probably wouldn't: this is one of the few summer flicks I'm dying to see unspoiled. Nolan makes movies, not frivolous money-making throwaways, and I think The Dark Knight will be no exception.

My favorite piece of Dark Knight artwork, by the way, remains this international poster (the first one, not the second), which was my desktop background for quite a while. You sit online all week digging up stories for your Cinematical readers and the Sunday you duck offline to take your pug to the dog park, Harvey Dent holds a press conference.

It seems Gotham's D.A. hopeful was supposed to hold a press conference on Sunday at 3pm. Those who were able to get on Dent's website discovered that the press conference had been pre-empted by a hostage crisis. Lawyer<strike> Joseph Candoloro</strike> Frank Nataro (who was apparently sending e-mails and voice mails giving hints as to what he was up to) took a girl hostage at a coffee shop. Dent ended up breaking into the coffee shop, negotiating with Nataro, and rescuing the girl. What a guy.

Edward sent us a run down of the whole thing that was posted on EyeCraveDVD's forums. Thanks, Edward! And if you'd like to hear the audio of the entire event, it's up via Dent's official site.

Fun stuff. Too bad the majority of the geek world missed out on this one! Dent's persistence, I fear, is going to put him on the bad side of a certain clown . . . and I still think all this viral stuff is leading up to a Two-Face reveal. The way they keep dangling these press conferences though, it will probably hit when we least expect it. I'd love to think it was all a big ploy and that we won't actually see Two-Face until the movie -- but you know that probably isn't going to happen.

The Dark Knight opens July 18th, 2008. Plenty of time to keep us chasing cakes, bowling balls, and campaigning for the handsome Dent.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Exhibitionist: Defending Day-And-Date

Filed under: Action, Foreign Language, Independent, New Releases, IFC, Paramount, Exhibition, George Lucas, Home Entertainment, Columns, Cinematical Indie

Imagine if The Dark Knight or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull initially opened in limited release, and then took a month or so to reach you in "flyover country." But on the same day that they hit those first theaters in New York and L.A., they were also available on your television, via Video on Demand. Would you wait a few weeks to see the blockbusters on the big screen or would you lack the patience and go ahead and download the movies to your cable box? Of course you would choose the VOD route. I probably would, as well.

Despite this column, I cannot claim to be a purist when it comes to theatrical film exhibition. I subscribe to Netflix and even sometimes watch old movies on the Watch Now streaming player. I now own a video iPod, and while I haven't yet tried watching a feature, I have had no problem watching shorts and television episodes on its small screen and am not totally against eventually downloading a whole movie from iTunes. And although New York's Film Forum is currently showing a ton of United Artists classics, many of which I've never seen at all and a number of which I've never seen on the big screen, I haven't been able to make my way to Manhattan to appreciate the retrospective.

But I certainly prefer watching movies in a theater to watching them at home (or on the go, in the case of the portable iPod), where I'm easily distracted and/or restless and rarely manage to sit through an entire movie, no matter the length, without pressing the pause button at least once. So, if The Dark Knight or Indiana Jones were available on VOD the same day they opened in my local theaters, there's no way I would stay home. Unfortunately, I know there are a lot of people who would still choose the VOD option. And that's with spectacle-heavy action movies that definitely look better the bigger they're projected.

I know this because there are already a lot of people buying bootlegs and downloading illegal copies, of which blockbusters are indeed the most popular. And there are also a good number of New Yorkers watching VOD versions of films distributed by IFC First Take -- most of which are simultaneously available on the pay-per-view channel IFC InTheaters the same day they open theatrically in Manhattan -- despite the fact that they could easily head over to the IFC Center or another arthouse cinema and watch the film on the big screen (for more money, of course).

At least there will always be a substantial population of New Yorkers who prefer going to the movies, which is evident in the continued success of those IFC releases playing in the city despite their being accessible through local cable service. For example, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is still playing at the IFC Center after nearly three months (maybe when it's been playing for 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 day, they'll have a party), and has grossed more than a million dollars, which is pretty good for a slow foreign film with an unappealing subject matter. Additionally, the film has been offered on VOD in the same time frame and has been IFC InTheaters' most popular title yet.

This week I got to meet the manager of the IFC Center, John Vanco, who I consider one of the last remaining heroes of theater exhibition (how many cinemas choose to show a short film instead of ads before the feature presentation?), and got to hear his defense, as a fellow almost-purist, of the day-and-date releasing strategy of IFC First Take, both as a profitable business model and a benefit to movie lovers.

The first argument is that a film like 4 Months would otherwise take weeks to months to reach people outside the major city areas, long after the media's excitement and discussion of the film has come and gone. Obviously, this is significant in terms of financial success, as it reaches the largest amount of people at the same time it's receiving the most attention, but it is also significant in terms of simply being seen, for the same reason. Plus, for the movie fans, it allows them to be a part of the discussion at its peak.

The second argument is similar, pointing out the difficulties of distributing a film to every corner of the United States theatrically just to make it available to those few cineastes in each and every town. The day-and-date model saves distribution costs while also more-directly reaching the handful of people who want to see 4 Months in any given nook of the nation. And again, it's part of the idea that some films just need to simply be seen.

However, the need to be seen mode of thinking contributes to a number of other problems for both movie lovers and the reputation of theatrical exhibition. This week alone there were two important discussions on this website regarding this subject. Eugene, frustrated with the Philadelphia Film Festival, pointed out how some smaller film festivals are projecting DVD copies of movies, which anyone should know is an improper way to view them. But for the smalltime filmmakers and the geographically obscure audience, it's okay because at least these films are getting to be seen. Right? No way. Not only does the movie look bad, but the term digital projection looks bad, as well. I'd hate to think someone might confuse the quality of DVD projectors with the quality of digital projectors in cinemas.

The other discussion, initiated by Kim, came with this week's release of the English-language dubbed version of Persepolis. This film is specifically more forgiven than others since the filmmakers, Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, directed the dub themselves, but it shouldn't be more forgiven just on the basis that it is a film that needs to be seen by as many people as possible, whether they be literate, illiterate or lazily literate.

There is a huge enough difference between a film like 4 Months and a blockbuster like Indiana Jones that it's probably not worth comparing them in a discussion about day-and-date, but I can't help but wonder what would happen to cinemas around the country if suddenly Paramount decided to release its summer tentpole on VOD May 22, the same day it's released in theaters. The idea is not entirely unimaginable; in fact, the head of Rainbow Media (owner of IFC) addressed such a future (using Spider-Man 3 as a possible example) back in 2005, when IFC InTheaters was first announced. And now that the service is proving to be very successful for the company, such a future might not be too far off.

But should it be? Sure, there are a number of non-moviegoers who would get to see Indiana Jones (or whatever) right away -- believe it or not, there are a lot of people who still live too far from a cinema to bother making the trek -- and sure, a lot of people would still actually feel a need to see such a big movie on a big screen, but certainly there would be a smaller theatrical gross than if the movie was only available in theaters. And that means the theater owners will be substantially hurt. Not that the media corporations should care. With such a large percentage of the people reached at one time, day-and-date would be terrific for ancillary revenues from toy sales and Snickers Adventures bars and other tie-in products.

So, what do you think? But one of the first questions to pop up in the aftermath was how this would affect the film -- could viewers stomach his portrayal in the same way? It's impossible to eradicate thoughts of his death from the mind as the news continues to grow and audiences finally break through the doors to see for themselves.

However, according to Cinema Blend, there have already been screenings, and they've presented problems for the dark and sure-to-be-awesome film. One scene in particular has been bothering audiences to the point that it might be completely removed from the film.

Hit the jump to find out more, but move on if you want no details about the brief scene.

Gallery: The Dark Knight

Quoted from CB: "The scene involves Ledger's Joker character pretending to be dead and being pictured in a body bag. Apparently the aftershock of Ledger's unfortunate death are such that many in the screening reacted rather badly to this moment."

While I can understand and imagine how eerie and disturbing that scene must be, it would be a shame to cut part of his performance due to what happened. If this was a lighter and more upbeat film, a scene that became darker due to later circumstances would be a shame, but this is The Dark Knight. His role is eerie, and is sure to be uncomfortable no matter what we see. Heck, I get goosebumps from the "Why so serious?" poster I included with the post. This is what Heath created, and I hope we can experience it in full.

But what do you think? Should the scene be cut out for sensitive audiences? Or, should it remain intact?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Video: Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes!

Filed under: Action, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

I'm not entirely too sure where this video came from (I believe a few links popped up in the SHH forums), but it's up on YouTube now, so we're all good. Check out the first video of Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes above, as she speaks out to members of the Gotham City press on why she feels everyone should support Harvey Dent (as played by Aaron Eckhart in the sequel). Gyllenhaal, as most of us already know, took over for Katie Holmes after the actress decided not to return for The Dark Knight. It's not much, and this doesn't look to be part of the film (though maybe it will show up on a TV screen in the background somewhere), but those who were curious to see Gyllenhaal in action can finally do so now.

Personally, at this point I'm dying to see a Harvey Dent political commercial. I want children asleep in their beds, and a calm voiceover to say something like, "It's 3am in Gotham City, and the phone rings. Who do you want answering that call? Batman? No ... how about District Attorney Harvey Dent." Check out the video above, and let us know what you think of Maggie Gyllenhaal in this role? I've always had a thing for this gal, so I dig her in just about anything. Whoever got there first received a bowling bag with a ball engraved with a number, and the usual Joker swag of a cellphone and a Joker card.
(Empire has some photos of the swag up and is one of the few sites not being completely overloaded.) Those who called the number were told "We know who you are" and that was that. As each bag was picked up, CTA received another stamp.

Now CTA is defunct, and forwards you to Acme Security Systems, where you are asked to enter your e-mail address and phone number for voice verification. For most (including Erik Davis and myself), the server wouldn't load. One person I know got through, and the next task is apparently to disable Acme's security system. The password is "Needle" for what it's worth -- I assume this is what you're supposed to voice verify.

New updates after the jump ...
And my friend Richey got the call! Here's what happened, in his own words: "Okay -- I got the call and I had to give my name, number and and email address. Bit of a pause then the distinct tones of GARY OLDMAN came on the line!! Jim Gordon says it's a trick, it was all a set-up and now I'm an official recruit of Gotham City PD. If I don't accept these terms, I'll be treated as a suspected member of the Joker's gang. Then it hung up on me!!"

What? REALLY? Because if that's all this was, than we have been April Fooled indeed. Fitting. Richey says he now feels like he's being watched.

However, whatever is going on with Harvey Dent is still in the works. His site is now overloaded. 3pm came and went with nothing, it's now 7pm EST and all that has happened is a successful rally for Dent.

We'll keep you updated if something goes on. So stay tuned ...

Update #1 -- I received the call and indeed, it's a very threatening Commissioner Gordon. I either have to help the Gotham PD, or go to jail for conspiracy to commit a criminal enterprise. At the same time that I received my phone call, Acme Security started flashing red with "Identity Captured!" My name, IP, and e-mail address have all been logged as evidence. Here's a screencap for those who couldn't get through.

Update #2 -- Looks like that's the end. Harvey Dent is back up, and nothing there has changed. However, some have pointed out the curious error in a few of the CTA travel stamps. Some of them were labeled April 4th. Quite possibly, this has all been a prelude to a trailer release for that day. Or it could have just been a typo . . .

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Update on 'Dark Knight' Viral Sites

Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

So today is the day we've all been waiting for. Apparently, there are a couple things to watch out for in the land of Gotham City. First off, the Joker has already kick-started his April Fools nonsense by unveiling a list of locations throughout the world along with this message: "Ready to have a ball? A special bag of fun awaits the first to claim it, but you'd better strike fast, there's no time to spare." As of now, only a few actual international locations have been revealed, with spots throughout the United States still left to be uncovered. The cities are all there, though, with the exception of New York City. What gives Joker? But it does include Philly, San Francisco, Miami, Austin, Las Vegas, etc ...

One imagines each location in each city will be revealed as we pass a certain time in the day. Last time Joker did something like this, it was mass chaos -- and I believe (if I can remember correctly) we walked away with a photo of the Joker. So there's definitely something that will be unveiled today, and I doubt it will be a photo of the Joker. Perhaps a new trailer? A photo of Two Face? Dunno. Another site to keep an eye on is I believe in Harvey Dent. Supposedly, Dent is holding a press conference this afternoon at 3PM (EST?), so be on the look out for that too.

Of course, if you should find anything at any of these locations, definitely let us know what it is. The Dark Knight hits theaters on July 18.

UPDATE: More cities, including some in the United States, have been revealed.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
