More on That New Punisher Flick

Okay, honestly, there isn't a whole lot of new information here, but I was just so darn pleased to hear somebody talking about The Punisher 2 flick again. Yeah, I know the first movie didn't play so well, but I absolutely love the character, and actually enjoyed the flick, so I'm excited to see what Tom Jane will do with a second chance at the franchise, especially now that the team has learned what did and didn't work out the first time around. Lots of room to improve, right? Good old Tom Jane recently sat down with BigFanBoy's livecast (apparently, the guy is making the rounds), and chatted with them about the direction of the new flick.Jane (odd to refer to him by his last name only, since it sounds like I'm talking about a girl) told BFB that action is finally happening again on the project, and a new script writer has been brought on board to offer a treatment. This is good in the sense of "hey, at least something is finally happening," but it is always a dangerous sign when scriptwriters keep replacing one another. You're teetering on the edge of development hell eventually, especially when you are the sequel to a flick which was not amazingly popular. Jane also echoed the recent sentiments of others involved with the project, saying he wanted to move away from the goofy humor of the first film: "... just straight noir, drama, with the inherent blood and guts in it." So, do you suppose a second movie holds great promise, or are you already writing off another sequel attempt from Hollywood -- land of no new ideas?
Geek Bytes: So Much More About the Punisher

Geek news I found while packing spices for a weekend cooking trip:- Oh baby, is there a lot of news about The Punisher's extended DVD at Newsarama. Read it all here, but be warned, if you're a Marvel fan it is going to make you want to shell out some extra bucks for the DVD. I, personally, am very excited to have a look at it.
- For those among us who like reading novelizations for their favorite movies, you can pre-order your copy of Spider-Man 3, the movie novelization, at Amazon. The only movie novels I tend to read are the Star Wars ones, but I'm sure the Spidey books are fun, too.
- Guillermo Del Toro answers some questions at EW. In his fanboy dreams, he wants to cast Bruce Campbell for a role in Hellboy 2. While this is admittedly unlikely to ever occur (at least for more than a cameo), it still makes Del Toro all the more awesome.
- Neat looking storyboards from a deleted X3 scene. Really, they look like a lot of the rest of the movie -- cars flying through the air, people with shocked expressions on their faces, and things breaking into pieces. If I had to title the flick, I would have given it the same subtitle my friends and I bestowed on the X-Men: Legends video games ... X-Men 3: X-Men Break Your Stuff.
- Hey, Ghost Rider minimates are coming. These toys promise to "deliver all the action-packed excitement of the film with every 2 inch figure." I know that's supposed to suggest the figures will be packed with action, but I can't help but interpret it to say "there's so little action in this film, we could fit it in two inches."
The Punisher Is Coming Back

It is sort of embarrassing to admit this, and I always duck my head and mumble when I end up talking to people about it, but I really liked The Punisher. Yes, Travolta was a terrible villain. Yes, the plot was more than a little hackneyed. Okay, okay, the whole thing was really campy and somewhat poorly assembled. I know it was not a great movie ... but I loved it. I think Tom Jane was fantastic as Frank Castle, and I want to see him at it again. Talk of a sequel has persisted since the first film wrapped, and from the sounds of it we're getting close to a return.MTV reports a quote from Tom Jane, who told them the script is only weeks away. In a comment sure to warm the hearts of Marvel geeks everywhere, he also promised the second Punisher attempt would contain more of what the fans want -- it'll be "darker, bloodier, and more unfriendly" than the last one. Yours truly is thrilled to hear the film is coming, and more thrilled to hear it's going to be edgier than the last time. Anyone else out there actually excited for this film?
Punisher 2 Gets Held Up

Unfortunate news on the Punisher sequel front, True
Believers. Tom Jane recently gave another Q and A session over at his message boards, and in the very first question
Tom back-tracked on his earlier suggestion about the movie filming this summer. According to Tom, P2 is
"still looking for a good script," which the team hopes to have in place by sometime this fall. In amusing
other news, Tom also verified that he did indeed drink actual Wild Turkey on the set, not just colored water:
"That was my favorite day of shooting on set." Tom also indicated that his favorite scene in the film is the
fight with The Russian, which took four days in a "rush job."Well...unfortunate that the film is being delayed, but at least it means they're not trying to just shove out a sequel to make some quick cash. Hopefully the effort they're putting into it will result in a great Frank Castle film.
