Cinematical Seven: Chick Flicks for Guys
Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Universal », Home Entertainment », Cinematical Seven », Lists »

Two things I enjoyed about Definitely, Maybe, which came out on DVD today: the cheesy jokes about New York City in the early '90s and the fact that it is a chick flick for guys. What I mean by the latter is that the movie seems targeted to females yet it caters more to the male viewer. It's basically a male fantasy: Ryan Reynolds tells the story of how he dated three beautiful women (played by Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz and Elizabeth Banks), one of whom he married and later divorced -- meaning he's now single again. And he also got a cute, precocious daughter (Abigail Breslin) out of the deal who becomes beneficial to him in his return to bachelorhood.
But then is it really a chick flick? I guess it is if you count romantic comedies in that grouping, though the genre has never necessarily been aligned with the term, nor vice versa. And in the age of Judd Apatow, it's more likely that any new romantic comedy is actually a guy movie. Do many men realize it's a movie for them, though? Probably not. Though chick flicks are typically movies primarily populated by women characters and/or a female protagonist (think Steel Magnolias), romance films not made by either Apatow or the Farrelly brothers may be thought of as being for the ladies, even if they feature a male lead, like Reynolds in Definitely, Maybe.
I'll admit I've always been confused about chick flicks as a term. I apparently enjoy many so-called chick flicks, including even (especially) Beaches. So, I may not be using the term correctly in this list. However, I am a guy and I know what guys want. So, I'm going to do this my way, and answer the following question: What other films may have been initially perceived by males as being made for chicks but which turned out to be more for them (us)?
Moviefone Ranks the Top 25 Sex Scenes of All Time
Filed under: Fandom », Lists », Images »
All this writing about sex, and I'm going to need a cold shower ... or two. Nothing makes a movie more memorable than a fantastic sex scene. If Jim hadn't tried to stick his "down there pal" into a pie, would American Pie be the classic that it is today? Would Brokeback Mountain still have been a major Oscar contender had Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger not attacked one another like a couple of wild (and horny) animals? Heck, Halle Berry chose the right script and the right time to let her guard down and roll around on a couch with Billy Bob Thornton -- and what did it get her? Yup, her first Oscar. And I can't be the only one to immediately think of the film Wild Things when I hear the names Neve Campbell and Denise Richards.
Let's face it -- sex sells. And sex also helps a mediocre film become one that's talked about for years on end. That said, those devious folks over at Moviefone have compiled a list of what they feel are the 25 Best Sex Scenes of All Time. All of the above aforementioned films are included (although I would've placed Monster's Ball ahead of the puppet sex featured in Team America: World Police), as well as more of our most favorite (and most heated, steamy -- orgasmic?) scenes and films like Bound (lesbian sex), Secretary (work sex), Unfaithful (adulterous sex), Boogie Nights (porn star sex) and the always-enjoyable Y Tu Mama Tambien (foreign-language sex). So take a look at their list, then come (hehe) back here and let us know which ones flow and which, well, blow.
Gere and Lane Reteam for More Romance

Apart from Fatal Attraction, which took the theme of adultery to the next level and then some, Unfaithful ranks right up there as one of those films that's just impossible to watch for anyone that's in a loving relationship ... if only because it simply freaks you out from start to finish, and leaves you with the need to strap a camera on your significant other so you can document their every move. Warner Bros. certainly liked the chemistry (or lack thereof) between Unfaithful stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane, as they've brought them onboard to star in an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks romance novel, Nights in Rodanthe.
This time, however, Gere gets a chance to play the other man. Story follows a doctor (Gere) who's traveling to meet up with his estranged son, when he stops at a North Carolina inn and hooks up with a woman (Lane) who's contemplating the future of her unhappy marriage. Ah, I think we know where this one is heading ... And talk about a guy who knows how to romance the written word, Sparks' novels are responsible for a host of other book-to-screen adaptations, including The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember. Makes you wonder how he plans to spend his Valentine's Day, huh?
