No 'Venom' for Gary Ross Until After 'Matt Helm'

Filed under: Deals », Fandom »

Last week it was widely reported that after providing a successful rewrite of the Spider-Man 4 script, Gary Ross had been approached by Columbia Pictures to rewrite the screenplay for the spin-off film, Venom, and to direct it himself. This was noteworthy for a variety of reasons, not least of which was the fact that Ross' writing-and-directing résumé, which includes Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, wouldn't suggest he was the guy for a comic-based summer blockbuster about an alien symbiote that turns people evil.

But now The Playlist says that, according to an unnamed but well-placed source, whatever Ross is doing with Venom will have to wait -- first he's going to direct a Matt Helm movie. The source says it's supposed to go into production next summer, which would push the shooting of Venom into 2011 at the earliest.

Matt Helm, a badass spy character created by Donald Hamilton, appeared in 27 novels between 1960 and 1993. Dean Martin played Helm in four movies in the 1960s, but they were campy rather than hard-edged. There was a short-lived TV series in 1975, too. As recently as this summer, Steven Spielberg was considering making a new Helm film, before deciding to make Harvey instead.

Gary Ross to Write and Direct 'Venom'?

Looks like Columbia Pictures is still interested in moving forward with a Venom spin-off movie, as Variety reports that Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) is in talks to rewrite and direct the movie. Ross, for those not aware, was the one the studio hired to re-write the latest draft of Spider-Man 4, due to begin production early next year with Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst all back for another (their last?) go-round.

Apparently the studio was so happy with the work Ross did on Spidey that they're now interested in having the guy rewrite and direct Venom, which we assume will follow the trials and tribulations of that black gooey alien entity that, when applied to a human's skin, turns them into either a vicious and violent monster or a fan of all things emo (or both!). The fact that Ross will be working on both Spidey 4 and Venom leads me to believe there might be some cross-over between the two, as that's all the rage right now and studios know how excited fans get when a character shows up in a movie he's not supposed to be in.

'Venom' Spin-Off Official, Recruits Its Writers

Filed under: Action », Horror », Deals », Sony », Scripts », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Remember the Venom spin-off rumors that were slithering around last July? They've now turned into something official. Sony is developing a Venom movie, and they've hired two writers to develop it: Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have only just left the still-filming Zombieland. The project is in such early stages that we don't have additional details, though more might become clearer once Spider-Man 4 settles down.

However, our Scott Weinberg actually caught up with Reese and Wernick last week and has this to say: "Based only on the half-hour I spent talking movies with the screenwriters, I can say that IF there has to be a Venom movie, then these are the guys who can pull it off. They seem to understand the practical (studio) side of the project, the professional (screenwriter) perspective, and (best of all) the enthusiasm needed to make the movie cooool. They couldn't divulge ANY tidbits at all, sorry! But at this early point, I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about Venom."

So, there you have Weinberg's take on the project and you know he'll probably be right. In the interests of keeping things balanced in cinematic geekdom, I shall remain skeptical about the symbiotic spin-off. Admittedly though, my bias may be purely based on how many jerks I know who sport Venom t-shirts.

Sony's Toying With 'Venom'

It looks like someone read my supervillains piece (yes, I'm that influential) because according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is looking to give Venom his/its own spin-off movie (first reported by IESB earlier this year). They think Spider-Man would benefit from a few stand-alone stories, as they actually consider it to be "an aging franchise." (We all better check ourselves into nursing homes then, seeing as we actually lined up for the first movie all those years ago!)

Now, as I stated so emphatically, I do believe a villain could carry his own movie. (After watching Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog, I'm even more convinced.) But Venom? Seriously? It's not even a character in the strictest sense of the word. It's a ... symbiote! (In the Ultimate Universe, it wasn't even that much, it was just a suit.) It just bonds to people and makes them do really bad things. How can you make a movie about a parasite? Will they give it the sympathetic angle of a lonely and silent creature who just wants to make some friends?

While Sony and Marvel have yet to comment, the studio has hired Jacob Estes to write a draft, and they're eying potential cast members. Topher Grace won't be reprising his role from Spider-Man 3, as they're not convinced he can carry a big budget picture. They should be more worried about a symbiote carrying a tentpole picture, but that's just me. Maybe the Spider-Man fans out there feel differently -- in fact, I know some must, because of the dozens of Venom T-shirts I've seen in my lifetime. Is Venom the character you want flying the Spider-Man banner?

Move Over Spider-Man, Venom Is Getting His Own Movie!

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

When Venom was finally revealed back in 2006, there were some apprehensions, but for the most part, anticipation was huge for the third Spider-Man movie. Then it came out, and even the die-hard fans seemed to be at least somewhat disappointed. What really sucks in these situations is when over-all disappointment tarnishes good bits. I imagine that Marvel is thinking the same thing. According to IESB, Eddie Brock and Venom are going to get their own film.

The site says that since the rights to Venom have reverted back to Marvel (New Line had 'em), they are meeting up with a number of "A-list writers" to work on a spin-off film. (They're not sure on how Sony fits into all of this.) IESB says: "We have to assume that since there is movement, and there has been recent meetings with writers, this property must belong to Marvel since they have made an interim agreement with the WGA."

It's not every day that we get the possibility of an evil spin-off. This could be cool, although a bit tricky with the whole Spider-Man part of it (even without the webbed hero as a star, the symbiote grabbed Parker first). But that's just me... What do you think?

Stan Lee Thinks Lizard Should Be Next Spidey Villain

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Sony », RumorMonger », Family Films », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

You'd think that Spider-Man creator Stan Lee would receive privileged information about Spider-Man 4, but apparently he doesn't even know what is going on in the comics, let alone the movie scripts. Still, he is smart enough to know what should happen in the next installment of the series: Dr. Curt Connors, who we've briefly seen in parts 2 and 3, should finally turn into The Lizard. Of course, an appearance from the scaly villain has been expected since Connors was first alluded to in the first film. In addition to suggesting that The Lizard should be the next villain, in a video interview with Reelz Channel's Dailies, Lee also discusses the possibility of Peter Parker ending up with Gwen Stacy rather than Mary Jane in part 4.

Lee's suggestion is simply that, a suggestion, as long as he has no real creative input, but he is right to say The Lizard is a logical next step. Certainly such logic makes it less of a surprise when we hear rumors about the villain already being a lock for the film. However, expecting a villain because of onscreen allusions means we should also logically predict that Man-Wolf and Robot-Master will show up at some point, too. Anyway, Lee probably wants to see another one of his own creations like The Lizard on the big screen instead of any of Spidey's newer villains, like Carnage, who is also being talked about for #4. For me, either villain or both is fine, just as long as Spidey doesn't team up with Venom to fight them. I actually stopped reading the comics following the Maximum Carnage storyline (though I did give the good-guy Venom series a fair shot), and I'd probably stop watching the movies at the same point. I know the end of Spider-Man 3 suggests this couldn't happen, but you never know -- either with comic books or the movies.

'Spider-Man 4' Villains Will Be Carnage and Lizard, Source Says

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Sony », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

If you're a serious Spider-Man fan, you've probably been wondering when the producers were gonna dust off Dylan Baker and FINALLY let him become the super-villain we've all been waiting for. Yes, newbies, the one-armed college professor who appears in all three Spider-Man films (for about 90 seconds at a time) is the guy who eventually gets turned into man-sized Lizard with a true hatred for Spider-Man. I'm assuming Sam Raimi wedged the character into the first two films, hoping to deliver a pay-off in Spider-Man 3, but I guess that flick was just too damn cluttered with other baddies.

According to one source, not only will Baker finally become The Lizard in Spider-Man 4, but we'll also have to contend with a certain villain known as Carnage. Spider-Man 4 would have to go a little bit "darker" than its predecessors to accurately capture the Carnage story, which focuses on a serial killer called Cletus Kasady who comes into contact with some of Eddie Brock's "symbiote" goo while they're both stuck in prison. (Connors, on the other hand, becomes Lizard after injecting himself with reptilian DNA in an effort to re-grow his missing arm.)

FreezeDriedMovies.com claims that these scoops come from the same source that gave them the Venom scoop a while back, so hopefully both villain reports are accurate. Apparently there's also talk of getting Black Cat into the Spider-Man 4 mix, because if a record-breaking opening weekend tells you one thing, it's that you can never have too many villains in your Spidey sequels. (Perhaps we'll get some of the goofier villains -- Rhino, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter -- in Spider-Man 5.) Plus, wasn't there a set-up for the Man-Wolf villain in Spider-Man 2? I can hardly keep track at this point.

Brand New 'Spiderman 3' Trailer Online Now

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Sony », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

We've gotten a few teases, but Sony has pretty much kept footage of Venom under wraps. But today us Spider-Man fans get to finally see the villain in action, as a final trailer for Spider-Man 3 has been unveiled courtesy of Comcast. Not only do we get to see shots of Venom, we get a good peek at some scenes, including his origin and a some fight sequences between him and Spidey. I have to honestly admit that it is actually too much footage. I've been dying to see Topher Grace get covered in the gooey black costume for months, but now I feel like I've seen so much that I've lost some of my excitement about seeing the actual movie -- not that the trailer makes the movie look bad; it is just overly satisfying and doesn't leave much in the way of suspense.

The venom footage isn't even half of the excessive spoils of the trailer, either. There are plenty of plot points and visuals that may give too much away with the characters of Mary Jane and Harry/Green Goblin 2. I don't even want to go into these spoilers here, because I'd rather let you decide whether or not to watch the trailer. I'm sure a lot of you can wait two months to see Venom (and the rest.) I sure wish that I had. Right now I feel like I've seen an abridged version of the film from beginning to end. And yet, there is still no clear presentation of Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy, which I think is kinda weird. Anyway, you should head over to Comcast's Spidey site regardless of your plans to watch the trailer because there is plenty of other goodies, like videos about the making of the film and about the history of the comic book.

New Batch of Spidey 3 Pics Hits Web

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

I'll be the first to admit to being excited about Spider-Man 3, having been somewhat blown away by the trailers, the footage and the images released online thus far. But, there comes a point when you've seen enough -- and, with only a month and a half before the film is set to hit theaters, you'd rather keep your eyes closed and hope there's at least a few surprises that haven't been ruined yet. With that said, a new batch of Spidey 3 pics have arrived to keep the high going, just as last week's exclusive footage buzz is starting to wear off.

This time around, we're provided with a very cool pic that shows Venom choking Spider-Man from below. Though he's somewhat out of focus, you tell he means business. There's also an image of what looks to be an explosion occurring in the middle of the woods, as well as two nice shots of Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) looking all sexy and big-chested; unfortunately, the second shot also includes Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) kicking some weak game. Finally, we have a shot of Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and Harry Osborn (James Franco) staring up at something (sinister?) heading in their direction, as Spider-Man balloons float nearby. If it were up to me, this would be the last set of images we see. While I congratulate the Spidey marketing team on practically handing us the entire film prior to its release, how about we leave the rest up to our wicked imaginations? Spider-Man 3 opens everywhere on May 4.

Big Batch Of Behind-the-Scenes Spider-Man 3 Pics!

Filed under: Action », Disney », Sony », RumorMonger », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

Yes, the title says it all -- a big batch of behind-the-scenes pics for Spider-Man 3 have surfaced over at AICN, who claim the images are from the Art of Spider-Man 3 book. Here's where you might say: "But Erik, we've seen pics, trailers and seven-minute clips -- what more can you show us that we haven't already had a taste of?" Well, would it help if I mention the name 'Venom?' The majority of the pics show us how those wizards over in the make-up department went about transforming Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) into Venom, followed by some concept art and models which show what Venom will look like once everything is complete. There's also a pretty cool Sandman panel consisting of Thomas Haden Church in several "magazine poses," as well as what appears to be some sort of model showing the Sandman transformation.

With Spider-Man 3 set to swing into U.S. theaters on May 4, Sony has bombarded us with plenty of Spidey coolness to whet our appetites. Sure, some of it has been authorized and some not, but we've seen enough to know what we're in store for. However, the same can't be said for another huge May release -- which also happens to be the third installment in a blockbuster franchise -- Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. Rumors surfaced recently that the reason why we haven't even seen a teaser yet (or a convincing set of stills) is because the pic is so far behind that its release date might need to be pushed back. It would be unheard of for Disney to push back the prime release date for, what could be, their biggest money-maker of the year -- but, that's what folks are saying. Now, before you Pirates fans begin freaking out, Cinematical spoke with a Disney rep yesterday, who said off-the-record that as far as they knew, the release date has not been moved and Pirates 3 will be released on May 25, as planned. Yet, that still doesn't answer our questions -- I mean, what gives? There's not even an official website yet?
