Roly Ritt: WB Starts Production on 'Scooby-Doo 3: The Beginning'
Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Warner Brothers », Family Films », Home Entertainment », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
First, the obvious news: There will soon be a third live-action Scooby-Doo movie. Now, three additional pieces of bad news:
1. It will be a direct-to-video production from Warner Premiere, which means we can probably expect it to be the kids' version of Lost Boys: The Tribe -- and I don't know any kids who deserve that sort of punishment.
2. It will be a prequel called Scooby Doo: The Beginning. Because the world just has to know how a normal dog becomes a pot-smoking food addict who can solve crimes and TALK.
3. The film will be directed by Brian Levant, who I'm sure is a very decent person, but just look at the films he's directed: Jingle All the Way, Problem Child 2, Snow Dogs, The Flintstones 2, and Are We There Yet? So ... yeah, I guess if WB is intent on going forward with this flick, they've found the right man for the job. The screenplay comes from a pair of brothers who are also turning the video game Spyro into a movie -- plus they just penned a film called Gym Teacher: The Movie.
According to Variety, Scooby Doo: The Beginning will premiere on DVD and Cartoon Network in late in 2009. (A live-action movie premiering on Cartoon Network? That's just crazy!) The IMDb has an early cast list up, but it could be erroneous at this early date -- but since I don't know who these actors are, I guess it doesn't really matter.
WB Readies Video Sequel to 'The Cell'
Filed under: Horror », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Warner Brothers », Home Entertainment »
Good news for fans of Tarsem Singh's certifiably wacky 2000 thriller The Cell: Warner Bros. is planning a video sequel to the Jennifer Lopez / Vince Vaughn flick. Only thing is ... none of the three people I just mentioned are coming back for Part 2. (Big shocker there.)According to Shock, October 14 is when you'll be able to enjoy Tim Iacofano's The Cell 2, which comes from the writing team of Alex Barder, Rob Rinow, and Lawrence Silverstein. Cast-wise (so far) we've got Tessie Santiago, Chris Bruno, and good ol' Frank Whaley. The plot synopsis over at IMDb uses phrases like "serial killer," "psychic investigator," and "into the mind of a killer." So expect a basic psycho-thriller with lots of trippy visuals -- only not as many as the first flick because money's pretty tight on video sequels.
You'll no doubt remember the last "WB Premiere" title to come down the pike: Return to House on Haunted Hill. (Or maybe you don't.) The direct-to-video studio branch also has The Lost Boys 2: The Tribe coming in a few months.
MGM Prepares 'Stigmata 2: Bleed Harder'
Filed under: Horror », MGM », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels », Religious »
More news from the world of direct-to-video sequel-dom: Looks like MGM aims to do a video-store follow-up to the 2000 Rupert Wainwright occult thriller in which Patricia Arquette bleeds all the hell over the place. Co-starring Gabriel Byrne and Jonathan Pryce, Stigmata grossed about $50 million bucks -- and probably did pretty well on DVD too. Hence the late-arriving semi-sequel.According to Shock, the sequel will be written by one Sean Hood, the art director turned screenwriter that horror freaks will no doubt remember from flicks like Cube 2, Crow 4, and Halloween 8. No word yet on who'll be directing the sequel, but hey, Rupert Wainwright's last gig was that abysmal remake of The Fog, so he's probably up for this assignment.
[ Note: The film is not actually going to be called Bleed Harder, but man wouldn't that be funny? ]
UPDATE: Screenwriter Sean Hood has a few things to say about the project (and working in the horror field in general) at his brand-new blog. Check it out.
