David O. Russell Finds Next Directing Project -- You Got A Problem With That!?

Filed under: Comedy », Deals », Newsstand »

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in front of the camera, David O. Russell (Three Kings, Outrageous YouTube Video) strikes again -- this time, by attaching himself to the Columbia Pictures comedy Sammy's Hill. Pic will be based on Kristin Gore's novel ... and if that name sounds familiar, it's because she's Al Gore's daughter. Screw Washington, this family belongs in Hollywood baby! Russell will pen the screenplay, as well as direct; currently, there's no word on whether anger management classes were part of the deal.

Book tells the story of a girl desperately trying to balance her career as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill, while at the same time attempting to find love in the seedy, depressing, money-hungry town. Doug Wick, who's producing along with Lucy Fisher and Red Wagon, says the film "will do for Washington D.C. what Talladega Nights did for race car driving." Wait, so audiences will feel the urge to camp outside the next congressional meeting with a few kegs of Budweiser? I don't get it. However, the book is then compared to Thank You for Smoking and Election -- two of my favorite dark comedies in recent years -- and so if Russell can somehow manage to churn out a smart, successful comedy without accidentally killing one of the cast members, Sammy's Hill could be a film to watch out for.

Washington: The Funniest Short Film I've Ever Seen

Filed under: Animation », Comedy », Independent », SXSW », Shorts », Cinematical Indie »

About a week before I hopped a plane to last March's South by Southwest Film Festival, a funny-looking envelope arrived on my doorstep. It looked a whole lot like the one David Poland received around the same time, and inside said package was an animated short called Washington. I threw the disc into my suitcase and broke it out while I was hanging with my festival posse. (Erik Childress and Eric Snider, if you must know!) To say the three of us "broke down laughing almost to the point of involuntary urination" would not be an understatement, and we spent the next week quoting Washington to one another. ("I'll kick you apart" makes a great stupid threat.)

Brainchild of the unquestionably twisted Brad Neely, Washington is a mega-funky animated rock video that goes to great lengths describing how amazingly awesome our first president was. Fantastic blog Screenhead (YouTube now) gives you the chance to enjoy the mini-flick in its entirety, although it might not be "work-safe," as they say. Me, I can't get enough of the thing. I wanna put the song on my iPod.

And if you don't find the short amusing at all, at least you spent 2.5 minutes to figure out what my sense of humor is like.

Actor Joe Pichler missing

Joe Pichler, a relatively unknown child actor who performed in the third and fourth installments of the Beethoven series and also appeared in the films Varsity Blues and The Fan, is still missing after abandoning his car near his family's home in Bremerton, Washington and leaving an alleged suicide note inside. Pichler, who is now eighteen, quit acting in 2002 to return home and finish high school. Pichler has so far not been found, though over 150 people have showed up to help search for him since he's gone missing.
