'Watchmen' Update: Sequel, Images, New Poster

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Images »

When Watchmen hits theaters in just about a month from now (on March 6th), will it mark the unofficial start of the 2009 summer movie season? Perhaps ... but what are we supposed to do until then? The New York Times has published a couple articles on Watchmen, with one being a straight interview with director Zack Snyder (his first since the legal dispute with Fox was settled, in which the studio will retain 8.5% of the gross receipts on the film and any sequels or spinoffs), and the other tracks the film's long road to the big screen.

Check out new images from the film -- including Jackie Earle Haley outside his Rorschach costume and a new poster (courtesy of TrailerAddict and Movie Spoilers) -- in our updated gallery below.

Snyder explains his changing of the ending (or the removal of a very large piece of it) by saying that, if he were to keep it as is, then that's 30 minutes he would've had to chop off somewhere else. Without spoiling the ending of the graphic novel, Snyder says, "Like, if you really talk about, What is the end of "Watchmen"? It's the exact same ending that there is in the book, there's no two ways about it."

As far as any sequels go, Snyder says he won't be involved in one ("Listen, they own the rights. If they wanted to go and hire some guy to make them a sequel to "Watchmen," I don't know that they would get any of those actors to do it, and I know that I wouldn't have anything to do with it."), but he does admit to almost creating a special comic with Dave Gibbons: "We never did it, but we were going to do a limited release Bazooka bubble gum. I wanted Dave [Gibbons] to draw a comic book for me, and you had to collect all of them to make it make sense ..." [continued after the jump]

Geek Daily: The Green Hornet Still Stings, Fanboy Release Dates, Ghost Rider 2, and More!

Rumors of The Green Hornet's demise were greatly exagerrated. Seth Rogen sent an e-mail to HitFix, upset that Drew McWeeny had not contacted him on the film's status. "The Green Hornet has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc. [The studio heads] have every intention on making it, and assuming we're able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibility, it should still hit the release date." Stephen Chow is still in to play Kato, and the LA Times' Hero Complex reports that Adam Sandler may have a cameo in the film as "a certain surprise superhero." Any guesses as to who that is?

According to its official MySpace, the long delayed Fanboys finally has a limited platform release on February 6: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Fransisco, Seattle, Houston, and Austin. Check your local listings if you live in these cities. (Two guesses where Austin's is!)

The final Watchmen poster has debuted over at Yahoo! Movies and I've added it to our gallery below. It's kind of ... bland and overly-Photoshopped. We've had such cool character one-sheets that you would expect them to come together a bit more, particularly when they can mimic 1970s newscasts so well.

If the poster has you worried about those black pants on Dr. Manhattan (which he did wear in the book occasionally) Zack Snyder assured the world that when they sit down on March 6th, you will see all of the Big Blue. Zack Snyder told MTV's Splash Page: "It's an R rated movie, right? What you see in the trailer has to be a little bit squished around so it can get on TV. I think in the final film you'll see it's true to the graphic novel. He's naked." (MTV Splash Page)

New, Awesome 'Watchmen' Poster

Shortly after the new extended Watchmen trailer was revealed during last night's Scream Awards comes this very slick looking teaser poster for the film, via Yahoo. Those familiar with the graphic novel will notice this image of Comedian falling to his death as a scene right at the beginning, and, since I've personally seen this scene in its entirety (read my rundown on Watchmen footage here), I can tell you that this is from the very first scene of the film as well. Essentially, Comedian gets into a brawl inside his apartment with an unknown assailant, and eventually gets thrown through his own window, down to the street below. After he lands, the fantastic opening credit sequence begins.

Definitely one of the cooler posters of the year, though it's hard for me to understand how the MPAA gives Kevin Smith and Zack and Miri Make a Porno tons of trouble, and yet they have no problem with a poster featuring a guy falling to his death. I don't think I'll ever get their reasoning, but regardless I'm totally pumped for Watchmen. Read the graphic novel if you haven't already. The film arrives in theaters on March 6th.

Check out this poster and a ton more images from the film in the gallery below.
