EXCLUSIVE: Final One-Sheet for Tyler Perry's 'Why Did I Get Married'
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », Lionsgate Films », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Posters »
And, honestly, that's a question most of us married folk ask ourselves (and our friends, and our family, and that stranger in the bathroom) from time to time -- only to arrive home one night, catch a glimpse of that smile and realize it was the best decision we've ever made. (Erik wipes away a tear.) Except when that son of a bleep cheats with that bleeping bleeper, and you find yourself bleeping pissed. What happens next? Cinematical has just received the final one-sheet for Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married (click on the poster for a larger image), based on Perry's stage play of the same name. Returning to the big screen for the first time in seven years, Janet Jackson stars as one half of a couple who decide to attend a therapeutic help-our-marriage retreat, but find complications when one of the other wives brings along a sexy young temptress.
As with Perry's last film, Daddy's Little Girls, there's no dressing up in drag here -- however, Perry does co-star in the flick, alongside Jackson, Jill Scott, Denise Boutte, Richard T. Jones and Sharon Leal. Part comedy, part drama -- and part Jackson (yum) -- Why Did I Get Married arrives in theaters on October 12.
Tyler Perry Gets to 'Meet the Browns' with Lionsgate

When you mention the name Tyler Perry around Lionsgate Films, dollar bills begin to immediately fall from the sky. Of course, that's fictitious, but Perry's worth to the Lionsgate empire is magnificent. The first three films Perry conceptualized, wrote and directed made the company over $200 million in box office sales and their worth in DVD sales is in the millions as well. It only makes sense then that Perry would be given the opportunity to film his fifth project with Lionsgate called Meet the Browns.Meet the Browns was originally a play written by Perry that is similar thematically to his previous films. A single mom, understandably exhausted both with family life and a hope for something greater, is rejuvenated by meeting the father she never had. After finding her father, she spends quality time with him and his joyous, high-spirited family, thus obtaining a newer understanding of her own life. The storyline sounds sweet and inspiring, especially for those enduring the same struggles.
Tyler Perry created Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion, and most recently Daddy's Little Girls starring Gabrielle Union -- another single parent, family-themed film that raked in audience members last February. (Granted, not as many people showed up for that one as they did for his previous big-screen efforts, but that's not stopping Lionsgate from taking more and more chances on the man.)
Clearly, Perry is an inspiration to those seeking success in doing what they do best. Perry's love for writing and connecting with the souls of his audience members is clear. Those qualities attribute to much of his success as a playwright and also helped him acquire his own film studio in Atlanta. His strong character driven storylines about overcoming the odds also relate beyond skin tone and gender, and are purely uplifting for all. Meet the Browns will start filming this summer as Lionsgate hopes to promptly release it after his fourth film with them, Why Did I Get Married?
Janet Jackson Will Star In Next Tyler Perry Film

Even though his latest, Daddy's Little Girls, didn't bash open the box office door quite like his Madea-related pics, that's not stopping Lionsgate from putting a lot of faith in Tyler Perry's magic hands. Obviously, there's an audience there -- his plays have been very successful -- and so we should expect at least two more Tyler Perry flicks coming from Lionsgate; the first being Why Did I Get Married?
With production set to begin in just a few weeks, Perry has somehow snagged Janet Jackson to star opposite himself, along with Sharon Leal and Jill Scott. Pic will mark Jackson's first time back on the big screen since 2000's Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and only her third film-related role. The good news for Perry fans is that he will be back in front of the camera, but not as his famous Madea character. Instead, the story focuses on a group of married couples who take an annual "let's examine our marriages" trip. But, when one of the wives brings a young, sexy gal into the mix, all hell breaks loose.
Apparently, Lionsgate was pressuring Perry to include his Madea character in Why Did I Get Married?, even though she wasn't in the play. (Could it be that one character equals an extra $20 million at the box office?) However, with Janet Jackson in there, I'm sure the studio will make their money ... assuming they find a quiet (read: dead) weekend to open this sucker up. For you Perry fans out there: Is it Madea that draws you, or are you down for anything that has Perry's stamp on it?
Lionsgate Holds on to Tyler Perry

I don't really get the whole Madea thing, and therefore I haven't been able to appreciate the films of Tyler Perry. But, that is understandable, and perfectly fine with me. Perry's films aren't made for me. They aren't made for any white critics, really. Enough people like Perry and his cross-dressed performance as Madea to have made his previous two films, Diary of a Mad Black Woman (directed by Darren Grant) and Madea's Family Reunion, huge successes at the box office. Enough people like him to give him an award for best actor (albeit from Business Week). And, finally, enough people like Perry to keep him employed by Lionsgate Films. Lionsgate distributed both of Perry's Madea features and it will also release the writer-director's latest, Daddy's Little Girls, on Valentine's Day, 2007. Although neither Perry nor his Madea character appear in the new film, Lionsgate isn't waiting to see if audiences mind. The studio has announced that it will hold on to Perry for two more films, both of which go into production next year. The first is called Why Did I Get Married and deals with the pros and cons of marriage. Based on one of Perry's stage plays (like the Madea films), it starts shooting in January. The second, A Jazz Man's Blues, tells the story about a jazz singer on his way toward stardom who has to return to his rural hometown to save a woman he had an affair with.
