Looks Like These Kids Made a Wrong Turn 2

The 2003 horror flick Wrong Turn pretty much came and went without much in the way of praise, hatred or attention in general. But Rob Schmidt's "woodbound mutants" chiller really does get better with repeat viewings, which is the only reason I'm even half-interested in Fox's upcoming Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. Intended for a direct-to-video release some time later this year, the sequel promises something I've wanted to see for years: Raving monster-men devouring the contestants of a reality TV show! (Check out the new (and NSFW) trailer over at Bloody-Disgusting.)

The director (Joe Lynch) might be a first-timer, but he's got help from screenwriters Turi Meyer and Al Septien, the duo who gave you Leprechaun 2 and Candyman 3 -- horror sequel masters if ever there was a pair. The cast is also well-steeped in the realm of horror: Leading lady Erica Leerhsen caught a brutal demise in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Henry Rollins recently slogged through Feast, Texas Battle got sliced up in Final Destination 3, Daniella Alonso will soon be seen in The Hills Have Eyes 2, and Ken Kirzinger ... well heck, he played Jason Voorhees!

Fox Names Date for Weeks

According to the Gorehound's Bible, Fox has just announced a bunch of release dates -- and they're all for Part 2s. We recently shared with you the news on The Hills Have Eyes 2 (March 2nd, 2007), Alien vs. Predator 2 (December 21st, 2007), and Wrong Turn 2 (release date TBA), but now we also have a debut date for ... 28 Weeks Later!

Yes, that's right, the sequel to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's fantastic sci-fi horror film will be opening on May 11th, 2007, a month that includes such heavy hitters as Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Shrek 3, and the Stephen King adaptation 1408.

The (potentially) bad news is that neither Boyle nor Garland will be involved with the writing and/or directing of the sequel. Both fellas, along with producer Andrew McDonald, are still connected as producers, but we have a new director (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) and a new screenwriter (Rowan Joffe) on board. Mr. Fresnadillo directed the rather cool Intacto, while Mr. Joffe is the writer of two flicks I've never heard of.

Also coming from Fox's horror division is Turistas (December 1st, 2006), which was helmed by actor-turned-director John Stockwell and stars Josh Duhamel, Melissa George, and the lava-hot Olivia Wilde. (Apparently it has to do with horrific organ harvesting in Brazil!)

Time to Take Another Wrong Turn

It's pretty rare for my opinion of a movie to change after subsequent viewings, but I do believe I was dead wrong when I semi-trashed Wrong Turn upon its theatrical release. A pal of mine (who's even more of a horror geek than I am, if that's possible) later insisted that I give the movie a second spin, and you know something? He was right. This is a pretty damn solid piece of survival horror.

Oh sure, it's nothing but Texas Chainsaw / Hills Have Eyes / Sawney Beane wedged into the setting of a modern-day West Virginia woodland -- but upon closer inspection, Wrong Turn is actually a pretty slick, fairly disturbing, and appreciably fast-paced cannibal thriller. (Plus, let's be honest: The only three women in the movie are Eliza Dushku, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and the luminous Lindy Booth, and that's what you call "batting a thousand.")

So here's the newest scoop, and I'm sure it'll come as a big shock: Wrong Turn 2, which Fox will be releasing straight to DVD, is presently shooting up in Vancouver. Plot synopsis: A group of reality TV show contestants are stalked and slaughtered by the cannibalistic freakazoids who went all ravenous in the first flick. (As someone who maintains a general disdain for reality TV, I'm digging the concept already.)

According to Fangoria, Wrong Turn 2 is being directed by first-timer Joe Lynch, and the cast includes horror-friendly names like Erica Leerhsen (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Ken Kirzinger (Freddy vs. Jason), Texas Battle (Final Destination 3), and (as previously reported) the ever-cool Henry Rollins. And the screenplay comes from the writing team of Turi Meyer & Al Septien, former collaborators on Leprechaun 2, Candyman 3, and one of the most horrifying movies ever made.
