Watch the First Trailer for Jim Carrey's 'Yes Man'
Filed under: Comedy », New Releases »
I know Jim Carrey's track record has a few blemishes on it, but I have a good feeling about this one. Yes Man has a simple premise -- a no-fun, take-no-chances guy decides to say yes to everything for a year -- and the trailer feels like the ol' Jim we fell in love with back in the '90s.
Plus, the director is Peyton Reed, who will always hold a place in many people's hearts for Bring It On and the under-appreciated Down with Love. Maybe he can keep Carrey's more buffoonish tendencies in check?
We'll find out when the film is released on Dec. 19. In the meantime, watch the trailer and let us know what you think. Can the premise work? Will it wind up being overly wacky or too cartoonish? Do you agree that Zooey Deschanel should appear in more movies?
First Pics from Jim Carrey's 'Yes Man'

Warner Bros. has released the first photos (click on each to view a larger version) from Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey as a guy who signs up for a self-help program in which the idea is to say 'yes' to everything and anything. At first, things are just peachy for our little 'yes man' until he realizes how much of a chore the whole thing really is. I imagine the film will bring Carrey back to his comedic roots, as it definitely evokes a sort of Liar Liar flavor. God knows Carrey is desperate for a hit; his last comedy, Fun with Dick and Jane, was okay at best. And let us not even go near his dramatic efforts (except for the awe-inspiring Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), because we won't find much gold under that rainbow.
Peyton Reed (The Break-Up) directs off a script from a couple of newbies, and Yes Man also stars the delicious Zooey Deschanel (who shall play my wife when and if anyone ever wants to make a biopic on my life), Bradley Cooper, Rhys Darby, John Michael Higgins, Danny Masterson, Terrence Stamp, Molly Sims and Rocky Carroll. Yes Man is due out in theaters on December 19.
Casting Bites Part One: Child Geniuses, Slippers, and a 'Yes Man'

Today, Variety has a swarm of casting nibbles, so here's part one:- He's one of the actors in Seth Macfarlane's (Family Guy) live action comedy, The Winner, and now Keir Gilchrist is flexing his mental muscles for William Fruet's The Egg Factory. He's starring as Matthew Hanson, "a 12-year-old genius who's recruited to work at a think tank." However, there's a girl in danger, so the super-smarty teams up with his estranged uncle to save her. I can only hope that his genius ways mean that he has some super-cool coat gadgets. Ah, those were the days.
- I bet after Enchanted, you were really hoping for another big-screen fairytale, or another Cinderella, right? I know I was, with excitement that can't be matched. Well, Andrew Seeley, who popped up in One Tree Hill as Johnny Vegas Norris, is the male lead in Warner Brothers' Another Cinderella Story. Yes, this is the sequel to Hilary Duff's A Cinderella Story. It looks like he gets to knock the socks off Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) this time around, and instead of Jennifer Coolidge as the Guest alum co-star, this time around it's Jane Lynch.
- Last up is yet another announcement regarding the cast of Yes Man, the Jim Carrey-starring film that has him saying yes to everything that comes his way. The latest name is Rocky Carroll, who got his cinematic start as a man in the VA Hospital in Born on the Fourth of July, and has since appeared in a slew of projects from Boston Legal to W.I.T.C.H. There's no mention of who he plays, but I'll go out on a limb and muse that he'll be someone that Carrey has to say yes to. The comedy is already in post-production, but it won't hit theaters until next year's holiday season.
Casting Bites: John Michael Higgins, Simon Baker, and Vince Colosimo

I wish turkey day was turkey month, but since we all have to work and don't want to end up looking like Mr. Creosote, it's time to get back to work. Elizabeth Berkley is soon going to play David Caruso's ex on CSI: Miami, but that's not the only casting news coming out of the weekend:- His name might not be on the tip of every tongue, but you've definitely seen John Michael Higgins around. He's been in a ton of stuff, the best of which rests on the plate of Christopher Guest. He was Michael McKean's lover and dog-show helper in Best in Show, a New Main Street singer in A Mighty Wind, and finally, For Your Consideration's Corey Taft, who said: "In every actor there lives a tiger, a pig, an ass, and a nightingale." Now Variety reports that he's got a role in Jim Carrey's Yes Man. Unfortunately, there's no word on who he'll play, but hopefully it'll be a decent gig and not just a brief blip.
- Ah, Simon Baker. The Aussie actor has made People's "Most Beautiful" list, and most recently, he's tried to whisk Anne Hathaway away from Adrian Grenier in The Devil Wears Prada, and starred with Winona Ryder in Daniel Waters' Sex and Death 101. According to Variety, he's now joining Alfred Molina and Hope Davis in The Lodger -- a Hitchcock remake that first geared up back in 2006. While they're not saying who he'll play, I imagine he'll be the lodger, since the only other younger man on the cast list thus far is Donal Logue, who is already playing Bunting.
- He usually pops up on television a lot, and in movies you've probably never heard of, but now Vince Colosimo has nabbed himself a role in a bigger-buzz feature. Variety reports that he has a part in Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, which already stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe and Carice van Houten. The movie, which is currently filming, is about a former journalist who was injured in Iraq, who then somehow gets hired to hunt down an Al Qaeda leader. Colosimo is playing some dude named Skip.
Casting Bites, Round Two: Julie Benz and Danny Masterson
Filed under: Action », Comedy », Casting »
Here's two more tasty casting bits:- She played the eternal follower Marcie Fox in Jawbreaker, and even co-starred in the super-awesome George of the Jungle 2, but Julie Benz is definitely best known for her super-evil, drawling vampire Darla from Buffy and Angel, and from her recent time as the bad-luck love interest of serial killer Dexter. While her long-term television work is all sorts of tasty, I wish I could say the same for her film choices. She's co-starring in the upcoming Rambo flick, and then, hold onto your seats -- Variety reports that she's shooting Lionsgate's action film, The Punisher: War Zone. (Check out other casting news on the film here.) While I'd like to see Benz in some tastier work that pushes her a bit, I have to say that the cast has me kind of interested, especially with musician/actor and Toronto native Keram Malicki-Sanchez also onboard.
- With the seventies safely stored in the past, Danny Masterson continues to move on to other pastures. He played the tough, geeky roommate of Anna Faris in Smiley Face (which really, really should hit theaters), he just finished a flick with his brother called Made for Each Other, and now Variety reports that Danny Boy is going to star opposite Jim Carrey in Yes Man as Carrey's best friend. This means that Bradley Cooper (Failure to Launch), who was previously attached to play the friend, must be out. While it sounds like some rip-off to Liar, Liar, it's actually based on the true story of a man named Danny Wallace, who decided to say yes to everything that came his way -- from SPAM to party invites. Stay tuned for all sorts of advertisements that will beckon you to say yes to the film like Wallace says yes to life. It's just begging to be used as a marketing gimmick.
Jim Carrey Says 'Yes' to Zooey Deschanel

I don't think I have to remind you that we here at Cinematical are big Zooey Deschanel fans. I'd say 'yes' to watching anything she's in, and that includes the brand new role announced this morning. The Hollywood Reporter tells us Zooey will be starring alongside Jim Carrey as his romantic interest in the new comedy Yes Man, for Warners Bros. and Village Roadshow. There's a bit of an age difference there, as Zooey is 27 and Carrey is 45, but who's really paying attention? Bradley Cooper has already signed on to play Carrey's best friend in the movie, which will begin shooting (I assume) within the next couple months.
Based on the memoir of a guy who actually did this (his name was Danny Wallace), Carrey will play a dude who decides he wants to change his life, and in doing so commits himself to saying 'yes' to everything. Of course, hilarity shall ensue. Zooey's stock is slowly starting to rise; she just wrapped shooting M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, where she stars opposite Mark Wahlberg (playing his wife). Apart from also doing a relatively short stint on the TV show Weeds, Zooey will return to the small screen for the Sci Fi channel miniseries Tin Man. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing her in everything. Is that possible? To just give her a small role in every movie that comes out? Directed by Peyton Reed (The Break-Up), I'd expect Yes Man to arrive in theaters at some point this summer.
Bradley Cooper to Star Alongside Jim Carrey in 'Yes Man'

"I want us to be open to new experiences -- I want us to say 'yes' to everything." That's what Owen Wilson's character tells his two brothers throughout The Darjeeling Limited, but what if someone actually lived a year of their life while saying 'yes' to everything? Someone tries to sell you something. Yes! Your friends want to jump off a bridge for hell of it. Yes! That girl from work who's always had a crush on you, but kind of looks like a werewolf, asks you out on a date. Yes! Man, the adventures you'd go on -- the stories you'd be able to tell if you somehow survived the year. Unreal. Well get this -- some dude actually did this ... in real life. He wrote a book about it, they're turning it into a movie called Yes Man starring Jim Carrey and Variety tells us Bradley Cooper has signed on to star as Carrey's best mate.
The book, which is also called Yes Man, was written by Danny Wallace. He was the type of guy who said 'no' a lot, until one day someone on a bus told him to say 'yes' more often. So what does he do? He spends one year saying 'yes' to everything -- and at some point along the way, this helps him win $48,000. Damn. Maybe I should say 'yes' more often. Cooper has a number of film roles coming up (apart from his TV work on shows like Nip/Tuck), but moviegoers might best remember him as the slimy boyfriend of Rachel McAdams in Wedding Crashers. Peyton Reed (The Break Up) will direct Yes Man, which I imagine will take some cues from one of my favorite Carrey comedies, Liar Liar. They will probably use some stuff from the book, as well as introduce new scenarios in which saying 'yes' could get our hero in a lot of trouble. A romantic interest hasn't been cast yet -- and you know there's going to be one -- so be on the lookout for a cute female actress to make her way into the picture soon.
Fox Picks Up 'Harvey and Marky: A True Story of Friendship and Betrayal'

If you're not a fan of the style of comedy popularized by people like Seth Rogan and Judd Apatow, it's probably not going to be a good year in comedy for you. Variety reports that Fox Atomic has purchased the comedy pitch Harvey and Marky: A True Story of Friendship and Betrayal. Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel are behind the script, and "the story revolves around childhood friends who hit a crossroads in their relationship when the shy Marky gets a girlfriend and becomes more independent. This devastates the very domineering Harvey, who in turn hires a fake girlfriend to compete with his old friend" -- If nothing else, at least this film has a few parts for the girls to play; since most comedies lately aren't known for their inclusion of the opposite sex.The comedy duo has been making some deals with Warner Bros. for the comedy property Himelfarb, and they have also been hired for production work on the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man for Warners, starting production this October. Paul began his career as an actor, and has worked on everything from Beverly Hills 90210 to the *
*Correction: Jarrad Paul appeared in the 2005 soccer comedy with Will Ferrell.
Jim Carrey Will Soon be a 'Yes Man'

In the wake of the crowd dis-pleaser The Number 23, Jim Carrey has been lining up the roles. He's currently got two famous headlining parts -- the voice that counts for Horton Hears a Who, and then the man himself in Ripley's Believe It or Not! -- if it ever gets a definite director. He's also gearing up for the man-loving prison escapee in I Love You Phillip Morris, and Sober Buddies -- where he plays a sober buddy who gets appointed to a partying exec to keep the guy in line. Now we've got number five. David Heyman, Potter producer, has told MTV News: "I've got this film with Jim Carrey called Yes Man, which I hope will get into production in the fall.""It's about a man who finds himself very depressed, and is always saying no. When friends ask him out, he always says no. [The film will explore] what happens when he decides to say yes to every thing that comes his way." Basically, Liar, Liar with a spin. The movie will be based on a book by Danny Wallace a radio producer for the BBC. Taken from parts of his diary, the story outlines everything the man says yes to -- from Internet and mail SPAM, to meetings for people who believe aliens built Egypt's pyramids. And, of course, he also says yes to all social and professional invites. For those of you who miss the old days of Carrey, Heyman says it will be like his old-school work, and he also claims: "It's one of the funniest scripts I've read." If it's that good, maybe the bad luck of 23 will disappear very soon.
