'The Young Victoria' Adds Not-So-Young Broadbent

We already heard about two of the new cast members, Miranda Richardson and Mark Strong, last month, but now Variety has got another new name added to the Graham King - Martin Scorsese - Julian Fellowes - Jean-Marc Vallee film The Young Victoria, and it's the lovely Jim Broadbent. Emily Blunt is starring as Victoria, with Rupert Friend playing Prince Albert, Richardson playing the Duchess of Kent (ol' Vickie's mom), Strong as Conroy and Broadbent playing King William, Victoria's uncle.Cinematical has been following the film every step of the way. I, for one, am really itching to see what they do with this world. Young Victoria will, as the title suggests, follow the royal icon as she ascends the throne at 18, her early years of reign (she ruled for a whopping 63 years) and of course, her marriage to Prince Albert, who has since become infamous for less-than-royal reasons. We already know that Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York) is involved, which could mean some tasty insight, but what's really great is the directorial eye behind it all. He hasn't been getting much chatter for this picture, but Scorsese isn't the one behind the camera, it's Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee, who made quite a splash with his coming-of-age film C.R.A.Z.Y. The director has an eye for youth, so it'll be interesting to see how he handles pushing his characters even further back in time. And really, with Jim Broadbent in the cast, you're at least guaranteed quality scenes from him -- and against Richardson? It's all too sweet.
Emily Blunt is Scorsese's Queen Victoria

Hollywood "Brit Girl" Emily Blunt has just signed on to play Queen Victoria in The Young Victoria. The movie is reported to chronicle the turbulent early years of Queen Victoria's rule, as well as her romance with Prince Albert, which yielded nine children. Martin Scorsese is producing the film with Graham King. (King accepted the last Oscar of the night this year, as producer on Scorsese's The Departed). Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay, he's no stranger to Oscar himself, having won for his script for 2001's Gosford Park. Blunt was nominated for a I'll be Blunt with you -- Emily Blunt's in a lot of damn movies. Next month you can see her in the horror flick Wind Chill. This Christmas she'll be in Mike Nichols' Charlie Wilson's War, with indie darlings Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks. She's also in The Jane Austen Book Club, (Zzzzzzz!), cool-sounding magician pic The Great Buck Howard with Hanks again and John Malkovich, Dan in Real Life with friend of comedy Steve Carell and foe of comedy Dane Cook, and the independent Sunshine Cleaning with Alan Arkin and the adorable Amy Adams. Whew! In conclusion, if you go to see a movie in the next couple years, there's a 50% chance Emily Blunt will be in it. No studio is attached just yet to The Young Victoria, but it sounds like a very classy affair. King, Scorsese, Fellowes, there's a lotta Oscar folks working on this thing! Might we have a contender?
