C'mon Weinstein! 'Youth in Revolt' Pushed Back to January!
Filed under: Comedy », Box Office », Exhibition »
Despite the fact that it's been receiving a whole ton of positive buzz (read our review here) following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Co. has decided to push back the release date for Youth in Revolt yet again to January 15, 2010. Those following the film will remember that it was originally supposed to hit theaters last December before being pushed to February and then October ... and now January of next year. And it wouldn't be such a big deal if the film was a piece of crap, but Youth in Revolt -- which features Michael Cera in his most hilarious role to date -- is actually a fun, original comedy that deserves to spend some time in theaters, like, before the end of this decade. Most likely this is due to The Weinstein Co. not having the funds or what-now to give this film a proper release, which isn't anything new. Last year The Road went through the same release date shift (it's now due on November 25 - fingers crossed it doesn't get pushed back too), and some sources were even speculating that the much-hyped Rob Marshall movie-musical Nine -- which is awkwardly scheduled to arrive in theaters on the same day as The Road, November 25 -- would also get shoved off to 2010 ... though the Weinstein boys have denied that to be true.
It's just a shame is all -- I know a lot of folks out there are looking forward to Youth in Revolt, and what a better time to release it than right after it received great buzz at a film festival. But, if all they can do is dump it in the middle of January, so be it. We'll be back at that time to remind you that it's worth the watch. Sigh ... Nick Twisp wouldn't stand for any of this nonsense!

As with most of the popular-book-to-film adaptations, you can look at Youth in Revolt a couple of different ways: From the point of view of someone who has read the source material, and (of course) from the point of view of someone who hasn't. C.D Payne's epic, 499-page novel is to teenage angst what the bible is to Christianity -- and it's always sort of reminded me of what a sequel to The Catcher in the Rye might look like if it was set in modern-day (if somewhat outdated) Oakland -- and featured a 14-year-old Frank Sinatra fanatic who would literally destroy an entire city if it meant winning over the girl of his dreams.
The problem with Youth in Revolt (the book) is that it's practically impossible to smash 499 pages of dark comedic brilliance into an hour and a half on the big screen, and, as such, Youth in Revolt (the film) definitely ends up feeling disjointed and forced in some areas -- but thanks to a wickedly hilarious performance from Michael Cera (easily the best of his career), this brainy teenage sex comedy does manage to dole out a handful of great scenes, making it worthy of your hard-earned box office dollars ... but only if you promise to read the book afterwards.

The Men Who Stare at Goats
If only they gave an Oscar for Best Film That Sounds LIke a Really Depraved Porn Flick. In reality this is a pretty awesome looking comedy in which George Clooney plays a soldier who is part of an elite force of psychic operatives and Ewen McGregor is the reporter out to get the story. Watch for this one on November 6.
Inception
This trailer for the latest film from Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) will give you a serious WTF feeling, but I mean that in a good way. There's some Matrixy stuff at work here. This one hits on July 16.
The Descent: Part 2
In a move that reminds me a bit of Aliens, the survivor of the original The Descent returns and makes another trip down into the caverns where some albino creepy crawlies made mincemeat of her friends. The original was a great scare flick and I get claustrophobic just thinking about it, but is a sequel really necessary? No U.S. release info yet.
'Youth in Revolt' Nabs a Trailer

The first trailer for Youth in Revolt has arrived online via our peeps over at Moviefone, and it definitely looks to feature a sort of mish-mosh of scenes that fans of the book its based on will no doubt love. Based on the epic novel of the same name (seriously -- if you love teen angst, I cannot recommend a better book), Youth in Revolt follows the exploits of teenager Nick Twisp (played here by Michael Cera), who, upon meeting a girl named Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), sets out on one highly destructive and embarrassing adventure all in the name of landing the girl of his dreams. There's a lot packed into this trailer, and those not familiar with the book may not "get" the strange Fight Club-esque vibe going on here, but two things stood out for me: 1) This is easily Michael Cera's most demanding role because Nick Twisp (and his various amounts of shtick) is a good ten steps out of Cera's comfort zone -- so it's nice to see him taking that leap, and 2) Portia Doubleday looks absolutely perfect as Sheeni Saunders, though I'm dying to hear more dialogue from her. Bonus: The cast is pretty brilliant in terms of hilarious character actors (Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi, Justin Long, Fred Willard and Ray Liotta), so we're bound to stumble upon a great scene or three.
All in all I'm skeptical, but definitely excited to watch the final product. As a huge fan of the book, I -- along with a lot of you -- have been waiting for this adaptation to take shape for quite some time, and so it'll be interesting to watch the ways in which they went about adapting this angsty behemoth for the big screen. Youth in Revolt hits theaters on October 30.

Exclusive: 'Youth in Revolt' Poster Premiere!

Get ready all you Twispians, because Cinematical has just received this exclusive teaser poster for Youth in Revolt, which stars Michael Cera as the ultra-angsty (and legendary) Nick Twisp and is based on one of my favorite books of all time. Ah, what can you say about Youth in Revolt? The book, written by C.D. Payne, has amassed a huge, cult-like following partly because we can all relate to being an awkward teenager who'd do anything to capture the love of that special someone, and also because it's just damn funny.
For those who haven't read the book (seriously, read it -- the thing is hilarious), Youth in Revolt follows the misadventures of a love-sick teen who stops just short of destroying the world in order to win the love of one Sheeni Saunders. Cera plays said teen, Nick Twisp, while newcomer Portia Doubleday plays Sheeni. The film also boasts a pretty impressive supporting cast, including Steve Buscemi (as Nick's seedy, trailer-trash father), Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long, Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart and Ari Graynor. Needless to say, I cannot wait to see this cast bring some of these wacky, ridiculous (and memorable) characters to life, and I'm sure you Revolt fans are right there with me.
Youth in Revolt hits theaters on October 30. Click the image below to view entire poster.

Michael Cera Flips Out on Set - 'Youth in Revolt' Pushed to Fall 2009

The first piece of viral marketing for Youth in Revolt has arrived online, and it comes in the form of that film's star, Michael Cera, having a little sh*t fit on set. Obviously this taps into the whole Christian Bale thing, which, I think we can all agree, is kinda played out by now -- but watching Michael Cera yell and curse is just funny no matter how so- ten-minutes-ago the source of the joke is. But this video does a bit more than make us laugh. First off, it confirms that Youth in Revolt is still in production (reshoots?) when it was supposed to be arriving in theaters in just a couple weeks from now. Second, at the end of the video, they tell us the film is now arriving in the fall of 2009 -- possibly making a pitstop at the Toronto International Film Festival like Cera's last film, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. And finally, the video shows us that Cera can get a little angry, jaded and pissed off -- and that's exactly what he'll need to do in order to take on the character of Nick Twisp, who's so full of teen angst it practically leaks out of his skin. Check out the video below, then let us know what you think.
WARNING: The following video contains lots of foul language.

After finishing up the first four volumes of the hilarious and endearing Scott Pilgrim graphic novels (the fifth hits stores on Wednesday), I was talking with one of my fellow Cinematical writers who was similarly fond of them and yet quite vocal in his discontent with the casting of Michael Cera in Edgar Wright's forthcoming big-screen adaptation (admittedly, the character does deserve someone a little... livelier).Between that, the less-than-amusing spot for Harold Ramis' Year One from yesterday's Super Bowl, his potential part in that fingers-crossed Arrested Development movie, the release of Youth in Revolt being bumped back, and his role in last month's Sundance curio Paper Heart (oh, heck, and tomorrow's DVD release of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist while we're at it) -- is 2009 due to be the year of Michael Cera, or rather, is Cera due for a backlash against his seemingly limited range of bumbling performances?
What do you guys think of the once and future George Michael?
Is 'Youth in Revolt' Being Pushed Back ... Again?

Oh look, it's a comedy from The Weinstein Co. that's about to have its release date pushed back for a second time. Who woulda thunk it? Well, considering that Youth in Revolt was supposed to hit theaters in February and we still haven't received photos, a poster or a trailer, it's fairly obvious the film isn't going to make its second date after originally eying a December '08 release. Though no official word has come down yet, according to several different sources it's looking like Revolt is going for another ride through 2009 -- and if I were a betting man, I'd say it may get dumped toward the end of summer. I briefly spoke to the film's star, Michael Cera, at a dinner party for Adventureland at Sundance, and he didn't really give any clues away as to how he felt about the finished product. All I know is that the book is one of the best (and my favorite) teen angst stories ever told, and the cast -- including Cera, Justin Long, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis and Portia Doubleday -- is fairly awesome if you ask me. So what's the hold up? No idea. But it's The Weinstein Co., who, after three (four? five?) years are finally releasing the comedy Fanboys on February 6. Hopefully Youth in Revolt is testing through the roof and they want to hold it for a prime date over the summer ... but something tells me that's not the case. Anyway, fingers are totally crossed -- we'll let you know what the new date is when (or if) it's announced.
Fan Made: Michael Cera Night Light

Surfing around online earlier today, I came across this nifty little site called Handmade Detroit. Scrolling down, I noticed this spiffy fan made Michael Cera night light that was created as a gift for Cera himself. See, the item (as pictured above) comes with a pretty cool story: Apparently, the new film Youth in Revolt (based on the best book evah!) was shooting some interior scenes in Ferndale, Michigan at the house of a person who is friends with the girl who writes for Handmade Detroit. So, in the spirit of giving and being nice and all that jazz, she -- along with a few friends -- put together gift bags full of groovy stuff from local shops for some of the cast and crew. Awww. I love people who go out of their way to give other people free sh*t. High five Handmade Detroit!
Anyway, you can check out a photo of the entire gift bag over at Handmade Detroit, as well as a list of what exactly was in it and a whole lot more. So, who wants a Michael Cera night light?
From Page to Screen: 'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist'

I think that everyone who loves Michael Cera's comedy – and that should be practically everyone – is a little worried about Michael Cera. Because even as Arrested Development becomes legend, Superbad wins over every twentysomething in sight, and Juno charms the pants off the entire nation, the hushed, often unspoken question is: how long can he milk this? Cera's shtick is killer, but it's also ultra-specific – he's the shy, unprepossessing, painfully awkward adolescent, a nice guy who's self-aware enough to get embarrassed but not confident enough to avoid it.
Cera is so good at playing this part in a way that's both touching and hysterical that it's propelled him to stardom. For me to say that I haven't enjoyed any of the incarnations of George Michael Bluth that he's given us over the past couple years would be a bald-faced lie. Indeed, I think the character he's crafted is one of the most impressive comic achievements of my adult lifetime. But even as I relish it, I start to fidget, because I can sense exasperation and annoyance threatening from just around the bend. Oh, maybe not mine – I could watch Cera do this forever, I tell myself – but certainly other people will soon lose patience and turn on the guy. One-trick pony, they'll yell. Do something else.
